Adrian whirled around to face Dr. Evans. The doctor stepped back, his hands shaking, his face drained of color.

"Adrian, I had no choice!" Evans stammered, raising his hands in surrender. "They had my family! Victoria threatened to kill my grandchildren! I had to declare Julian dead so they could extract the baby from his dying wife!"

"You monster," Adrian hissed.

"He's telling the truth about one thing," Maya interrupted, pointing at the secondary monitor that tracked the building's structural integrity. "They are planting explosives on the panic room door!"

They didn't have time for vengeance. Adrian grabbed a heavy flashlight from the emergency kit and smashed it against the back wall of the panic room, revealing an old maintenance shaft meant for building ventilation—a remnant of the tower’s original 1920s architecture.

"Get in," Adrian ordered Maya. She didn't hesitate, sliding into the narrow, dusty shaft with the baby securely strapped to her chest using the yellow blanket. Adrian forced Dr. Evans in next, keeping a gun trained on his back. "If you make a sound, you won't live to see the bottom."

Just as Adrian climbed into the shaft and pulled the heavy steel grate shut behind him, a deafening explosion rocked the panic room. The shockwave blasted through the shaft, showering them in dust and debris.

They scrambled down the narrow metal ladder in total darkness, guided only by the faint light of Adrian's phone. The shaft led down to the sub-basement of the city's abandoned subway system, which connected to the Ashford Tower's lower levels.

As they dropped down onto the damp, gravel-strewn tracks of the forgotten subway, the cold air hit them. The baby began to cry—a weak, pitiful sound that echoed dangerously through the tunnels.

"Shh, Nora, shh," Maya pleaded, rocking the baby frantically. "Please don't cry."

"We need to move," Marcus said, having survived the initial blast and meeting them at the bottom via an alternate route. "They have tracking dogs."

Suddenly, the beam of a powerful flashlight cut through the darkness of the tunnel ahead of them. A group of men appeared from the shadows, their weapons raised. But they weren't wearing the tactical gear of the Syndicate. They wore long black coats, and their leader was a man Adrian recognized instantly—a man who was supposed to be dead.

It was Julian.
