"We’ve been compromised," Marcus shouted, drawing his weapon and taking a defensive position by the entrance hallway. "The mainframe has been hacked from the inside. Someone wiped the security codes."

Adrian grabbed Maya and the baby, ushering them into a hidden panic room concealed behind a bookshelf in his study. Dr. Evans followed closely behind. The room was reinforced with titanium plates and operated on an isolated analog circuit.

As the heavy steel door sealed them in darkness, the sound of heavy boots echoed in the penthouse outside. Through the hidden camera feed inside the panic room, which ran on an independent battery, Adrian watched the monitor.

What he saw broke his heart.

Walking into the penthouse, guiding three heavily armed Syndicate mercenaries, was Victoria Ashford—Adrian’s stepmother. The woman who had raised him after his biological mother passed away.

"Search the place," Victoria commanded, her usual elegant voice replaced by a cold, calculating tone. "Adrian thinks he is clever, but he doesn't know the first thing about family loyalty."

Inside the panic room, Adrian clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white. He wanted to burst out and confront her, but Maya reached out, her small, cold hand gripping his wrist.

"Don't go," she whispered. "That lady... she visited the warehouse. She’s the one who chose me to bring the baby here."

Adrian looked at Maya, the puzzle pieces violently snapping into place. Victoria hadn't just betrayed him today; she had been pulling the strings all along. She was the head of the Viper Syndicate. She had killed Julian.

On the monitor, Victoria walked over to Adrian’s desk, picking up a framed photograph of Julian. "Oh, Julian," she sighed with a twisted smile. "You should have just given me the access keys to the offshore accounts. Now, your little bastard daughter will have to sign them over to me when she turns eighteen. If she lives that long."

The baby wasn't just any child. She was Julian’s daughter. She had survived the crash, kept hidden by the Syndicate for four years in a stasis facility, or perhaps born via an emergency procedure that had been kept secret from the world.

Suddenly, Victoria stopped. She looked directly at the hidden camera lens disguised as a screw in the wall.

"I know you're in there, Adrian," she said softly, walking toward the bookshelf. "And I know you brought Dr. Evans with you. Did you know he was the one who signed Julian’s death certificate while Julian was still breathing?"
