Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Don

Headline: "He thought he had her trapped—but he didn't realize who was standing right behind her."

The door shattered inward, sending splinters of wood flying across the room. Dr. Cross was thrown to the floor by the sheer impact, his scalpel skittering away under a sofa.

Through the dust stood Viktor, holding a suppressed pistol, his expression completely blank. Behind him were two other men in dark coats.

"Mr. Vale wants to see you both," Viktor said simply.

Cross scrambled to his feet, trying to regain his composure, his face pale with fear. "Do you know who I am? I just saved your boss's life! You can't treat me like this!"

"Actually, the nurse saved his life," Viktor replied calmly. "You almost killed him. Move."

Minutes later, Mara and Cross were escorted down a private, freight elevator to the sub-basement of the hospital. They entered a secure, VIP recovery room that had been completely locked down by Adrian Vale’s private security.

Adrian was propped up in the bed. He was still incredibly pale, hooked up to IV drips and monitors, but his gray eyes were sharp and intensely focused. The aura of power he radiated was suffocating, even while recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound.

"Mara," Adrian said, his voice quiet but carrying immense weight. "And Dr. Cross. Sit."

Two chairs were shoved behind them. Mara sat, still clutching the black ledger to her chest. Cross refused to sit, attempting to stand tall.

"Mr. Vale, this is an outrage!" Cross demanded. "This nurse broke into my office, stole confidential medical research, and—"

"Shut up, Julian," Adrian interrupted. His tone wasn't angry; it was bored. "I don't care about your complaints. I care about results. Viktor, what did she find?"

Mara didn't wait for Viktor to speak. She placed the ledger on Adrian’s bedside table. "He’s harvesting organs from the charity clinic. He’s using the hospital's resources to run a black-market syndicate."

Adrian’s eyes drifted to the ledger. He flipped through a few pages, his expression remaining completely unreadable.

"Interesting," Adrian murmured. He looked up at Cross. "You know, Julian, my family has owned a significant share of this hospital for twenty years. We tolerate a lot of things. Greed, ego, even a little creative accounting. But we do not tolerate people who put our investments—or my life—at risk."

"I saved you!" Cross lied, his voice cracking.

"The nurse saved me," Adrian corrected, his gaze shifting to Mara. He looked at the deep red bruise forming on her neck where Cross had grabbed her hair earlier. His eyes darkened. "And I believe I explicitly said... no one touches her."

"She’s a nobody!" Cross screamed, losing his mind as his empire began to crumble. "She’s a penniless nurse with a dying mother! I am the Chief of Surgery! You need me!"

Adrian leaned forward slightly, wincing as his abdominal wound pulled, but his gaze never wavered.

"Viktor," Adrian said. "Take Dr. Cross to the secure wing of our private clinic. I think he has some valuable assets that could be... redistributed."

Cross's eyes went wide. "No! No, you can't do this! I have connections! The mayor, the police chief—"

"They work for me, Julian," Adrian said softly. "And right now, you are worth much more to me in pieces."
