Chapter 4 - The Deal of a Lifetime

Headline: "She thought she was saving lives—but now she’s the personal doctor to the city’s most feared crime boss."

As Cross’s screams faded down the hallway, the VIP room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Mara stood up, her knees trembling slightly. She had just witnessed a man being sent to his death—or worse—and she was standing in front of the monster who had ordered it.

"Am I free to go?" Mara asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Adrian looked at her, a faint, amused smirk playing on his lips. "Go where, Mara? To a home you can't afford? To a mother who will be kicked out of her memory care facility by the end of the week because your bank account is empty?"

Mara bit her lip. He knew. Of course he knew. A man like Adrian Vale knew everything about everyone who crossed his path.

"I will find another job," she said defiantly.

"With a black mark from Julian Cross on your record? I don't think so," Adrian said, leaning back into his pillows. "But I have a proposition for you."

He signaled to Viktor, who stepped forward and placed a document on the bedside table.

"This is a contract," Adrian explained. "You will become my personal medical director. You will oversee my health, treat my men when they cannot go to public hospitals, and manage the private clinic I just... acquired from Dr. Cross."

Mara stared at the document. "I'm a nurse, not a mafia doctor."

"You are a brilliant medical mind who wasted her talent serving ego-maniacs for pennies," Adrian countered. "In exchange, I will pay you a salary of half a million dollars a year. Your mother will be transferred to the premier private care facility in the state tomorrow morning, all expenses paid. And no one will ever touch you again."

Mara’s mind was spinning. Half a million dollars. Her mother’s safety guaranteed. No more predatory landlords, no more overdue bills, no more fearing corrupt superiors.

But the cost was her soul. She would be working for the mafia.

"And if I say no?" Mara asked.

Adrian’s gray eyes locked onto hers, filled with a terrifying depth of understanding. "Then you walk out of here. I don't force people to work for me, Mara. But remember... the world outside is very cold to quiet girls who don't have anyone to protect them."

Mara looked at the contract. She thought of her mother, who didn't even recognize her most days, but deserved to live her final years in peace and comfort. She thought of Julian Cross, who had treated her like garbage, and how easily Adrian had crushed him.

She picked up the pen.

"I have one condition," Mara said, her voice firm.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And what is that?"

"No organ harvesting. No human trafficking. If I run your clinic, it remains a place of healing, not a slaughterhouse."

Adrian smiled, a genuine, striking smile that made him look incredibly handsome—and incredibly dangerous.

"Agreed," he said.

Mara signed her name at the bottom of the page. She had just signed a pact with the devil, and she had no idea how hot the fire was going to get.
