Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Trap

Headline: "The ultimate trap has sprung! The jaw-dropping truth that changed the city’s power dynamic forever."

The following morning, the city was rocked by the biggest political scandal in its history.

Leaked documents, video recordings, and financial statements detailing the massive organ trafficking syndicate run by Dr. Julian Cross and Senator Evelyn Cross were broadcasted on every major news network. The evidence was undeniable, absolute, and utterly devastating.

Evelyn Cross was arrested by federal agents before she could even leave the hospital where she was being treated for her "accidental" gunshot wound. The entire Cross empire was dismantled overnight.

In the quiet sanctuary of Adrian’s private penthouse, Mara stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sunrise over the city skyline.

The door opened, and Adrian walked in. He was no longer wearing his heavy coats or carrying weapons. He looked relaxed, pouring two cups of coffee and handing one to her.

"It's over," Mara said, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "The Cross family is finished. Your empire is safe."

"Our empire, Mara," Adrian corrected, standing beside her. "You played a major role in this. Without your courage, Julian would have killed me on that operating table, and Evelyn would still be trafficking innocent people."

Mara looked down at her coffee, a strange, lingering thought in her mind.

"Adrian... there's something I’ve been meaning to ask you," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Ask me anything."

"The night you were shot... the night you brought yourself to my emergency room," Mara said, turning to look him directly in the eyes. "You knew who Julian Cross was. You knew what he was doing in that hospital. And you knew he was trying to kill you to cover his tracks."

Adrian’s expression remained perfectly calm, but a tiny, enigmatic glint appeared in his gray eyes.

"And?"

"The bullet that hit your shoulder... it was a clean shot. But the wound in your abdomen, the one that almost killed you..." Mara took a step closer to him, her heart beating fast not from fear, but from the sheer brilliance of the realization. "It was surgical. It was precise. It didn't damage any major organs, but it caused just enough bleeding to make you look like you were dying."

The silence in the room became absolute.

Mara continued, her voice trembling slightly. "You weren't ambushed by rivals. You orchestrated your own shooting. You had your own men shoot you, and you came to Saint Jude’s specifically on Dr. Cross’s shift."

Adrian looked at her for a long moment. Then, he let out a low, soft laugh.

"You really are too smart for your own good, Mara," Adrian murmured.

"Why?" she asked. "Why put yourself through that?"

"Because the Cross family was getting too greedy. They wanted to take over my family’s shares of the hospital, and they were planning to use the federal government to seize my assets," Adrian explained, his tone completely matter-of-fact. "I needed to destroy them completely, but they were too well-protected. I needed a public, undeniable crime. I needed Julian to attempt to murder me on an operating table in front of witnesses."

"And you knew I would save you," Mara whispered.

"I had researched every member of that hospital's staff," Adrian said, stepping closer, his hand gently reaching up to brush a strand of hair behind her ear. This time, there was no pain—only a deep, protective warmth. "I knew you were the only nurse with the skill, the courage, and the desperate need for money to defy Julian Cross and keep me alive. I gambled my life on you, Mara. And you didn't let me down."

Mara stared at him, completely stunned by the sheer depth of his manipulation. He had played everyone like chess pieces—including her.

She wasn't angry
