CHAPTER 1 — THE BABY THAT DESTROYED A MARRIAGE

Laura had never imagined that two pink lines could become a death sentence.
The pregnancy test trembled in her fingers while tears blurred her vision.
"Thank you," she whispered, pressing one hand against her stomach.
For years she and Diego had dreamed about another child.
Life had never been perfect, but they survived together.
At least...
That was what she believed.
She hurried downstairs.
Diego stood in the kitchen drinking coffee while reading emails on his phone.
His face showed no emotion.
"I'm pregnant."
Silence.
He slowly lowered his mug.
"What?"
"I'm pregnant."
Instead of happiness...
His face turned white.
Then cold.
Then terrifying.
"That's impossible."
Laura laughed nervously.
"The doctor said a vasectomy isn't immediately effective. Remember? You still needed follow-up tests."
Diego stood up.
"You think I'm stupid?"
His voice echoed through the kitchen.
"I had surgery two months ago."
"You know there's still—"
"WHO IS THE FATHER?"
The words hit harder than any slap.
Laura stared at him.
"What?"
"You heard me."
His eyes were filled with hatred.
"Tell me his name."
She felt her knees weaken.
"I never cheated on you."
"Liar."
He threw his wedding ring onto the counter.
It bounced once before rolling onto the floor.
Eight years...
Reduced to a single metallic sound.
That night he packed a suitcase.
He didn't hesitate.
He didn't cry.
"I'm moving in with Paola."
Laura froze.
Paola.
His cheerful coworker.
The woman who constantly called Laura "my sister."
The woman who always praised their marriage.
Apparently...
She had already prepared a place for Diego long before this argument.
By sunrise...
Half the neighborhood knew.
Laura wasn't the faithful wife anymore.
She was "the woman who got pregnant after her husband's vasectomy."
The rumors spread faster than wildfire.
Her mother-in-law arrived carrying black garbage bags.
Not flowers.
Not comfort.
She came to collect Diego's belongings.
"You embarrassed this family."
"I never cheated."
The older woman smirked.
"They all say that."
The door slammed behind her.
Laura collapsed onto the floor.
Completely alone.
...
Days later...
Diego uploaded a smiling picture with Paola.
Champagne.
Fancy restaurant.
His arm around her waist.
Caption:
"Sometimes losing a liar is the beginning of peace."
Thousands liked it.
Friends congratulated him.
Some even commented:
"You deserve better, brother."
Laura read every comment while vomiting into the bathroom sink.
Morning sickness.
Heartbreak.
Humiliation.
Everything happened at once.
Then came the divorce papers.
Diego didn't come alone.
Paola sat beside him like she already owned his future.
He slid a folder across the table.
"Sign."
Laura opened it.
Her hands began shaking.
He wanted the house.
Minimal support.
Full custody rights if the baby wasn't his.
And one sentence nearly stopped her heart.
If DNA proved the child wasn't Diego's, Laura would reimburse every marital expense from the previous three years.
She burst into laughter.
A broken...
Hopeless laugh.
"So now you're billing me for being your wife?"
Diego leaned forward.
"You should've thought about that before sleeping around."
Laura pushed the papers back.
"I'm not signing anything."
His eyes darkened.
"You'll regret this."
For the first time...
She believed him.
That night...
She pushed a chair against her apartment door.
Not because she expected someone.
Because fear had already moved in.
...
The next morning...
She walked into the ultrasound clinic alone.
No husband.
No family.
No friends.
Only hope.
The cold gel touched her skin.
The monitor flickered.
A heartbeat appeared.
Strong.
Beautiful.
Laura cried.
"My baby..."
Then...
Dr. Salinas stopped smiling.
She zoomed in.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Her breathing changed.
"When exactly did your husband have his vasectomy?"
"Two months ago."
The doctor became unusually quiet.
Seconds later...
The examination room door suddenly burst open.
Diego.
Paola.
Both wearing smug smiles.
"Perfect timing," Diego sneered.
"Now tell us how old her boyfriend's baby really is."
Dr. Salinas slowly turned toward him.
Then looked back at the screen.
Her face became deadly serious.
"Mr. Diego..."
May you like
"You should come closer."
"There's something here that changes everything."
