CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET HIS OWN FATHER KEPT FOR TWENTY YEARS
Within forty-eight hours...
Diego lost everything.
His company suspended him pending investigation after discovering he had falsified reimbursement claims during the same period he was publicly attacking Laura.
Paola left him.
She admitted she had believed he was the victim.
"I don't date liars."
She walked away without looking back.
His mother stopped answering his calls.
Neighbors who had once applauded him now whispered when he passed.
But fate had prepared one final blow.
Laura received a phone call from an elderly attorney.
"There is someone who wishes to speak with you."
She almost refused.
Until she heard the name.
Antonio Herrera.
Diego's estranged father.
The man no one had seen in nearly twenty years.
When Laura arrived at the lawyer's office, Antonio looked much older than she remembered.
His eyes filled with regret.

He placed an envelope on the desk.

"What?"

"He grew up believing betrayal destroyed our family."
"But it wasn't betrayal."
"It was a lie."
"I should have told him years ago."
Laura closed the envelope.
"So he destroyed his own marriage because he repeated the same mistake."
Antonio nodded slowly.
"He became exactly what he hated."
Months later...
Laura gave birth to two healthy babies.
A boy.
And a girl.
DNA confirmed what she had known all along.
Diego was their father.
By then...
It no longer mattered.
He stood outside the courthouse one last time, watching Laura leave with the twins.
He whispered through tears,
"I was wrong."
Laura looked at him quietly.
Then smiled—not with triumph, but with peace.
"You didn't lose me because of the vasectomy, Diego."
"You lost me the moment you chose suspicion over trust."
She turned away.
