Chapter 3 - THE VAULT OF SHADOWS

Trapped Beneath the DiamondsThick grey smoke poured into the boutique through the ventilation shafts. Panic erupted among the elite shoppers as the fire alarms blared and emergency lights flashed red.
"Get the key!" Julian shrieked to his men amidst the chaos. "Kill the boy!"
"Leo, run!" Eleanor shouted, grabbing his wrist with surprising strength and shoving him toward the back corridor—the private showroom where the ancient vault stood.
Leo didn't hesitate. Driven by pure survival instinct, he sprinted down the hallway as gunshots echoed behind him. The tactical guards Eleanor brought were engaged in a violent firefight with Julian’s men in the main lobby.
Leo slammed through the heavy wooden doors of the private showroom and locked them behind him. He found himself in a luxurious room lined with bulletproof glass cases holding multi-million-dollar diamonds. At the far end stood a massive, reinforced steel door with no digital keypads—only a single, tiny keyhole at its center.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Someone was kicking the showroom door outside.
"Open the door, kid!" Julian’s voice boomed through the wood. "You’re a fake! A nobody! If you step into that vault, you won't leave alive!"
Leo’s hands shook uncontrollably as he shoved the golden key into the lock. It fit perfectly. He turned it clockwise.
CLACK. WHIRRRRR.
Heavy mechanical gears, untouched for thirty years, groaned to life behind the wall. The giant steel door slowly swung inward, revealing a dark, dust-covered stone chamber hidden beneath the skyscraper.
Leo ducked inside just as the showroom doors splintered open. He slammed the vault door shut from the inside and pulled the manual lock lever.
Inside, the vault was lit by dim, emergency solar lamps. In the center of the room sat an mahogany desk. On top of it was a sealed leather envelope addressed to: "To My Son, Leonardo."

With trembling fingers, Leo tore open the envelope. Inside was a handwritten letter from his late father, along with a digital drive and a DNA test document. But as Leo read the first line, his heart stopped:
"Leo, if you are reading this, I am already dead, and Eleanor has found you. But do not trust her. She is not saving you. She was the one who ordered the fire."
