CHAPTER 2 – THE BILLIONAIRE WHO NEVER FORGAVE BETRAYAL

The ballroom exploded into applause.

Not because anyone was happy...

But because they thought Mateo was about to deliver another one of his arrogant speeches.

Crystal glasses clinked.

Camera flashes illuminated the stage.

Mexico City's elite smiled politely, unaware that they were seconds away from witnessing a scandal that would dominate headlines for months.

Mateo adjusted his expensive tuxedo and looked directly at Valeria.

His smile was strangely calm.

Almost rehearsed.

"My beautiful wife," he began.

"I want everyone here to know how grateful I am..."

Valeria smiled with relief.

Maybe she had misunderstood the distance between them.

Maybe tonight was their chance to start over.

She folded her hands together.

Her eyes filled with hope.

Then Mateo's expression changed.

His smile disappeared.

His eyes became cold.

"I've spent four years pretending."

Silence swept across the ballroom.

Valeria blinked.

"...pretending this marriage meant something."

A nervous laugh escaped from one of the guests.

Surely this was a joke.

It had to be.

But Mateo continued.

"I married a woman who could never give me a family."

The room froze.

Valeria felt every heartbeat echo inside her chest.

She whispered almost inaudibly.

"Mateo..."

He ignored her.

"I sacrificed my youth."

"My future."

"My name."

"For someone who couldn't even become a mother."

A woman near the front covered her mouth.

Another guest quietly started recording.

Within seconds...

Dozens of phones were pointed toward the stage.

The humiliation was no longer private.

It had become entertainment.

Valeria slowly walked toward him.

Her voice trembled.

"Please..."

"Let's talk somewhere else."

Mateo stepped backward.

"No."

"I want everyone to hear the truth."

She reached for his hand.

He pulled away as if her touch disgusted him.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

For the first time...

Some guests looked uncomfortable.

Even those who admired Mateo wondered if he had gone too far.

Valeria forced herself to remain calm.

"You promised..."

"We would face everything together."

Mateo laughed.

The sound was cruel.

"I lied."

"You were useful."

"Nothing more."

Every word struck harder than the last.

She remembered the nights he had held her while she cried after failed fertility treatments.

The vacations meant to "help her relax."

The flowers.

The handwritten letters.

The promises.

All lies.

Years of lies.

Near the dessert table...

An elderly woman quietly shook her head.

"Something isn't right."

Her husband whispered back,

"Watch carefully."

"That man has planned every second."

Mateo snapped his fingers.

The ballroom doors opened.

Every guest instinctively turned.

High heels clicked against polished marble.

Camila entered wearing a shimmering gold gown that hugged her visibly pregnant body.

Two beautifully dressed little children walked beside her.

A little boy no older than five.

A little girl about three.

Both smiling innocently.

Valeria's face turned completely white.

The bouquet slipped from her fingers.

It landed softly on the floor.

Camila smiled.

Not with guilt.

Not with shame.

With triumph.

She slowly approached Mateo.

Without hesitation...

He wrapped an arm around her waist.

The children hugged his legs naturally.

Like they had done hundreds of times before.

Then came the sentence that shattered every illusion.

"This..."

Mateo announced proudly...

"...is my real family."

The room erupted.

Some guests gasped.

Others whispered.

A few quietly slipped closer, desperate to capture better videos.

Nobody wanted to miss history.

Valeria stared at the children.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The little boy looked almost identical to Mateo.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same dimples.

Her knees weakened.

"When..."

she whispered.

Mateo answered without emotion.

"For six years."

Valeria stopped breathing.

Six years.

Their marriage had lasted only four.

That meant...

He had been cheating before their wedding.

Before he proposed.

Before he placed the engagement ring on her finger.

Everything had been fake.

Camila gently rubbed her pregnant belly.

"I never wanted this to happen publicly."

Her fake sympathy sounded almost convincing.

"But children deserve a father."

Valeria looked directly at her childhood friend.

The girl who had shared birthday parties.

School lunches.

Secrets.

Dreams.

"You..."

Valeria whispered.

"My own sister wouldn't have done this."

Camila smiled softly.

"You always trusted people too easily."

Laughter spread among a group of wealthy socialites.

"I knew she couldn't keep him."

"Poor thing."

"She should've seen it coming."

One woman leaned toward another.

"Camila is much prettier anyway."

The words reached Valeria like knives.

Nobody defended her.

Not one person.

Hidden behind a marble pillar...

One guest remained perfectly still.

Leonardo Navarro.

He had arrived twenty minutes earlier without announcing himself.

He rarely attended social events.

He hated publicity.

But tonight...

He hadn't come for Mateo.

He had come because someone he deeply respected had once asked him to make a promise.

A promise he had never forgotten.

His eyes never left Valeria.

He watched every insult.

Every tear.

Every humiliation.

His jaw slowly tightened.

His security chief stepped closer.

"Sir..."

"Should we intervene?"

Leonardo answered without taking his eyes off the stage.

"Not yet."

"She still believes she's alone."

Back on stage...

Mateo reached into his jacket.

He removed a thick envelope.

Inside...

The divorce papers.

He threw them onto the table in front of Valeria.

"Sign."

She stared silently.

"I said..."

"Sign."

Her hands shook violently.

"I won't."

Mateo leaned close enough that only she could hear.

"If you refuse..."

"I'll make sure everyone knows you're nothing without me."

Valeria slowly raised her head.

For the first time that evening...

There were no tears.

Only heartbreak.

"You already have."

She picked up the pen.

Every guest leaned forward.

Even the musicians stopped breathing.

The ballroom had become a courtroom.

History was about to change.

Valeria uncapped the pen.

The tip hovered above the signature line.

At that exact moment...

A deep voice echoed from the back of the ballroom.

"Don't sign anything."

Every head turned.

The room fell into absolute silence.

Leonardo Navarro stepped out from the shadows.

No bodyguards.

No introduction.

Just a calm man in a simple white shirt.

Yet the moment several billionaires recognized his face...

The color drained from theirs.

One CEO quietly whispered,

"Oh my God..."

"Why is he here?"

Mateo frowned.

He had never met Leonardo personally.

But something inside him suddenly felt...

Terribly wrong.

Leonardo walked toward the stage.

Slow.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Each step echoed through the silent ballroom.

When he finally stopped beside Valeria...

He looked down at the divorce papers.

Then gently closed the folder with one hand.

Without even looking at Mateo...

He said quietly,

"You don't get to throw away what never truly belonged to you."

Mateo laughed.

"And who exactly are you supposed to be?"

Leonardo slowly lifted his eyes.

A faint smile appeared.

"The man..."

May you like

"...your late father warned you never to cross."

End of Chapter 2...
