CHAPTER 5 – THE TWIN THEY ERASED FROM HISTORY

The ballroom became so quiet...
...that the soft hum of the crystal chandeliers sounded deafening.
Valeria stared at Leonardo.
Her lips parted.
But no words came out.
A twin?
It couldn't be true.
"My parents..." she whispered.
"They never told me."
Leonardo nodded slowly.
"They were trying to protect both of you."
A wave of confusion swept through the guests.
Even Mateo momentarily forgot the disaster surrounding him.
He frowned.
"What ridiculous story is this?"
Leonardo didn't even acknowledge him.
Instead, he looked at Valeria with unexpected kindness.
"Your father wanted you to hear the truth only when you were finally safe."
Valeria clutched the silver hospital bracelet tighter.
Her fingers trembled.
The engraving—
Baby Girl Mendoza
—looked decades old.
She felt as though her entire childhood had suddenly become a lie.
Leonardo motioned toward one of his assistants.
The man carried a worn leather briefcase to the center of the ballroom.
Inside...
Were dozens of documents.
Old hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Photographs.
Newspaper clippings.
Everything had been carefully preserved.
Leonardo opened the first folder.
"Twenty-nine years ago..."
"...your mother gave birth to identical twin girls."
Valeria felt dizzy.
"The delivery was difficult."
"Both babies survived."
"But only one was taken home."
The guests exchanged stunned looks.
Someone whispered,
"How does a family hide something like that?"
Leonardo answered without looking up.
"Because someone made sure the truth disappeared."
He placed an old photograph on the table.
In it...
A young Ricardo Mendoza stood beside his wife in a hospital room.
His wife held two newborn babies.
Not one.
Two.
Valeria gasped.
The woman in the picture looked exhausted...
Yet incredibly happy.
She remembered that photograph hanging in her childhood home.
But only one baby had ever been visible.
Leonardo quietly slid another photograph beside it.
"The version you grew up seeing..."
"...had been altered."
The original showed both infants.
The framed copy in the Mendoza mansion showed only one.
Someone had literally erased an entire child.
Valeria covered her mouth.
"My mother..."
"Did she know?"
Leonardo's face darkened.
"She never stopped searching."
He opened another file.
"Your mother believed the second baby had died during childbirth."
"That is what the hospital told her."
"But your father didn't believe it."
"He spent years investigating."
"What he discovered..."
"...destroyed him."
Across the room...
Camila's breathing became uneven.
Something about this story frightened her.
Far more than the fake fertility report.
She slowly stepped toward the exit.
One of Leonardo's security guards quietly blocked her path.
"I'm leaving."
"I'm not under arrest."
The guard remained expressionless.
"Our employer has asked everyone to remain until the truth is finished."
Camila swallowed hard.
For the first time that evening...
She looked genuinely terrified.
Mateo noticed.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Camila refused to answer.
"Camila!"
She avoided his eyes.
His anger slowly turned into suspicion.
"You knew about this?"
Still...
Silence.
Leonardo continued.
"Your father eventually located a retired nurse."
"She had worked the maternity ward the night you were born."
"Before she died..."
"...she gave a sworn statement."
The assistant placed a small digital recorder on the table.
Leonardo pressed play.
An elderly woman's shaky voice filled the ballroom.
"There were two healthy baby girls."
"A wealthy couple arrived shortly after midnight."
"Someone offered money."
"One baby disappeared before sunrise."
The recording crackled.
Then the woman whispered words that sent chills through the room.
"The hospital told everyone the second child had died..."
"...but I saw her leave alive."
Valeria burst into tears.
All those birthdays...
All those lonely moments...
All those years believing she was an only child...
Had been built on a lie.
She looked toward Leonardo.
"Is she..."
"...alive?"
Leonardo held her gaze.
"Yes."
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
Valeria's heart pounded.
"Where is she?"
Leonardo hesitated.
"For many years..."
"...I couldn't find her."
"But six months ago..."
"We finally did."
Every guest leaned forward.
Even the reporters streaming the scandal live forgot to type.
Leonardo removed a sealed envelope.
Inside...
Was a recent photograph.
He placed it face down on the table.
Valeria reached toward it.
Then stopped.
Her hands shook uncontrollably.
She wasn't sure she was ready.
Leonardo spoke softly.
"Before you turn it over..."
"...there's something you need to know."
"The woman in that photograph..."
"...has absolutely no idea she was born a Mendoza."
"She believes her adoptive family is her biological family."
"And..."
"...she has no idea that you've been searching for each other your entire lives."
Valeria slowly turned over the photograph.
The instant she saw the face...
She froze.
The woman smiling back at her looked almost identical.
The same deep brown eyes.
The same smile.
The same tiny birthmark near her left eyebrow.
It was like staring into a mirror.
Tears streamed down Valeria's face.
"My sister..."
she whispered.
Then...
Something else caught her attention.
The woman wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
With one arm around her shoulders...
Was none other than...
Mateo Garza.
The ballroom erupted.
Mateo's face turned completely white.
He staggered backward.
"That's impossible..."
Valeria slowly lifted the photograph.
Her voice cracked with disbelief.
"Mateo..."
"...how do you know my sister?"
No one answered.
Because in that single photograph...
Everyone had just realized...
May you like
This betrayal had begun long before Camila ever entered their lives.
