CHAPTER 4 – THE VIDEO THEY THOUGHT HAD BEEN DESTROYED

The enormous LED screen flickered.

Static filled the ballroom.

For two long seconds...

No one spoke.

Then...

A man's face appeared.

Gray hair.

Wire-rimmed glasses.

A white medical coat.

Every guest immediately recognized the logo embroidered on his pocket.

The San Rafael Fertility Institute.

Valeria's hands began to shake.

Her breathing grew shallow.

She knew that face.

Dr. Esteban Rojas.

The physician who had looked into her eyes three years earlier and told her she would almost certainly never become a mother.

The same man whose words had destroyed her confidence...

Her marriage...

And nearly her will to live.

Mateo's heart slammed against his ribs.

"No..."

he whispered.

"No, this can't be happening."

Camila instinctively stepped backward.

Her fingers tightened around Mateo's arm.

"Turn it off," she hissed.

"Do something!"

Mateo looked toward the hotel's technicians.

"Shut that screen down!"

No one moved.

Every employee stood frozen.

Because standing quietly beside the control booth...

Were six men in black suits.

None of them wore hotel uniforms.

None of them spoke.

But every one of them carried the unmistakable earpiece of Leonardo Navarro's private security team.

The chief technician swallowed hard.

"I'm sorry, sir..."

"I no longer control the system."

The recording began.

The date appeared in the corner.

Three years earlier.

Dr. Rojas sat inside what looked like a private office.

He wasn't speaking to a patient.

He was speaking to someone hidden behind the camera.

His face looked exhausted.

Older.

Ashamed.

"I've agreed to make this statement because I can no longer live with what I did."

A wave of whispers spread across the ballroom.

Several guests lowered their phones.

Others zoomed in.

This was no longer gossip.

It was evidence.

On the screen, the doctor continued.

"My name is Dr. Esteban Rojas."

"I was the lead fertility specialist responsible for treating Mrs. Valeria Garza."

"I deliberately falsified her laboratory results."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

Valeria covered her mouth.

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

The doctor continued.

"I accepted money."

"I altered the hormone analysis."

"I replaced her ovarian reserve report."

"And I signed a diagnosis that I knew was false."

The room became deathly silent.

Dr. Rojas lowered his head.

"I told an entirely healthy woman..."

"...that she would probably never conceive."

"I stole years of her life."

"I destroyed her marriage."

"There is no excuse."

Mateo's breathing became uneven.

His forehead glistened with sweat.

"No..."

"No..."

He looked around desperately.

Someone had to stop this.

Someone had to defend him.

But the faces around him had changed.

The admiration...

The respect...

The envy...

Had vanished.

Only disgust remained.

The doctor spoke again.

"The payment was arranged through an intermediary."

"I never met Mr. Mateo Garza directly."

"But I was informed..."

"...that the false diagnosis had been requested for financial and personal reasons."

Every heartbeat inside the ballroom seemed to stop.

Then...

The doctor uttered the sentence that shattered what little remained of Mateo's defense.

"The intermediary was..."

"...Mrs. Camila Torres."

Camila screamed.

"He's lying!"

"That video is fake!"

But even as the words left her mouth...

The screen changed.

A new image appeared.

Bank records.

Wire transfers.

Dates.

Amounts.

Signatures.

One transfer.

Another.

Then another.

All traced to shell companies connected to Camila.

And finally...

A transfer into an account belonging to Dr. Rojas.

Exactly one week before Valeria received her diagnosis.

An accountant near the front stood up.

He adjusted his glasses.

"I verified those documents during an audit last year."

"They're authentic."

Another executive slowly nodded.

"The account numbers are real."

"This isn't fabricated."

Camila's legs nearly collapsed beneath her.

She looked at Mateo.

"Do something!"

"You promised you'd protect me!"

Mateo stared at her...

Speechless.

For the first time in years...

He realized there was no lie left big enough to save them.

Valeria slowly walked toward Camila.

Each step echoed through the silent ballroom.

Twenty years of friendship...

Reduced to ashes.

She stopped only inches away.

"Why?"

Camila looked away.

Valeria asked again.

"Why?"

No answer.

Only silence.

Valeria's voice cracked.

"I shared everything with you."

"My birthdays."

"My home."

"My dreams."

"You held me while I cried."

"You prayed with me."

"You told me not to lose hope."

She could barely continue.

"Every time I blamed myself..."

"You already knew I was innocent."

A tear rolled down Camila's cheek.

Not from remorse.

From fear.

Leonardo watched quietly.

He knew the truth wasn't finished yet.

The deepest wound...

Hadn't even been revealed.

He looked toward one of his assistants.

The man gave a subtle nod.

Everything was ready.

Valeria turned away from Camila.

She could no longer bear to look at her.

Instead...

She unfolded the handwritten letter from her father.

The ballroom became silent once more as she began reading.

"My dearest Valeria..."

"If you are reading this..."

"...it means I failed to protect you while I was alive."

Her voice trembled.

"There is something I discovered only weeks before my death."

"I hired investigators after noticing inconsistencies in your medical reports."

"They found evidence that someone close to you was involved."

Valeria stopped reading.

Her tears blurred the ink.

Leonardo gently placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"You should finish."

She nodded.

Took a deep breath.

And continued.

"The investigators uncovered one more secret..."

"A secret so terrible that I couldn't bring myself to tell you without absolute proof."

"If Leonardo is giving you this letter..."

"...he also has the proof."

Valeria slowly lowered the paper.

She looked at Leonardo.

"What proof?"

Leonardo didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket once again.

This time...

He removed a small velvet box.

Inside...

Was a tiny silver baby bracelet.

The kind hospitals place on newborn infants.

Engraved on the bracelet were just three words.

Baby Girl Mendoza

Valeria frowned.

"My parents only had one child."

Leonardo looked into her eyes.

His voice was almost a whisper.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."

The room fell silent.

Even Mateo forgot his own fear.

Leonardo slowly closed the box.

Then delivered the sentence that left every person in the ballroom frozen.

"Valeria..."

"You weren't born alone."

May you like

"You have a twin sister."

End of Chapter 4...
