CHAPTER 3 – "THE MAN YOUR FATHER FEARED"

A heavy silence swallowed the ballroom.
No music.
No whispers.
No clinking glasses.
Even the hotel staff had stopped moving.
Mateo narrowed his eyes at the stranger standing beside Valeria.
He searched his memory.
The face looked familiar...
But he couldn't place it.
He forced a laugh.
"I don't know who you think you are..."
"...but you're interrupting a private family matter."
Leonardo didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He reached down and gently picked up the divorce papers from the table.
He flipped through each page with the calm precision of a man reading a routine business report.
Then he looked at Valeria.
"Did you ask for this divorce?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Were these terms negotiated with your attorney?"
Again...
"No."
"Were you given time to review the financial disclosures?"
Valeria looked confused.
"I... I've never even seen those documents before."
Leonardo closed the folder.
His expression remained unreadable.
"I thought so."
Mateo folded his arms.
"Those papers are perfectly legal."
"Our lawyers prepared everything."
Leonardo glanced at him.
"Really?"
He turned one page around and held it toward the crowd.
"The valuation of the Garza Automotive Group..."
"...is based on financial statements from fourteen months ago."
A murmur spread through the guests.
Leonardo continued.
"The company's current assets are more than double this amount."
Another page.
"The investment properties listed here..."
"...are missing two recently acquired commercial buildings."
Another page.
"The offshore investment account..."
"...doesn't appear anywhere."
Mateo's heartbeat quickened.
How...
How could this stranger know any of that?
Across the room...
Several corporate lawyers quietly exchanged nervous looks.
One whispered,
"Those numbers aren't public."
Another answered,
"They're confidential banking records."
A third slowly looked toward Leonardo.
"...Unless you're the bank."
Mateo clenched his fists.
"You've been spying on me."
Leonardo smiled faintly.
"No."
"I've been financing you."
The sentence landed like thunder.
Several businessmen nearly dropped their champagne glasses.
Leonardo calmly walked toward one of the enormous windows overlooking Mexico City.
The lights of the skyline reflected across the glass.
Without turning around...
He spoke.
"Eight years ago..."
"You walked into Corona Capital Holdings asking for your first business loan."
"You had one dealership."
"It was losing money."
"No collateral."
"No credit history."
"No investors willing to touch you."
Mateo's face turned pale.
Leonardo continued.
"Your application was rejected."
"Twice."
"Then..."
"...someone personally requested that I review your file."
Valeria looked up.
Her tears slowly stopped.
She had never heard this story.
Leonardo finally turned back.
"The request came from one man."
He looked directly at Valeria.
"Your father."
The room erupted into whispers.
Valeria's breath caught in her throat.
"My father?"
Leonardo nodded.
"Ricardo Mendoza."
"He told me..."
'The young man isn't ready yet.'
'But my daughter loves him.'
'Give him one opportunity.'
'Don't tell either of them.'
"If he succeeds..."
"...let him believe he earned it."
"If he fails..."
"...I'll quietly repay every peso."
Valeria's eyes filled with tears.
Her father...
Even after his death...
Had still been protecting Mateo.
Mateo couldn't speak.
He remembered that meeting.
The mysterious approval.
The impossible interest rate.
The investor introductions.
The sudden business opportunities.
He had believed it was luck.
It wasn't.
Every door had been opened...
Because of Valeria.
Leonardo slowly approached Mateo.
"You spent years telling people you built your empire alone."
"You even accepted Entrepreneur of the Year."
"You gave speeches about determination."
"You wrote a bestselling business book."
He leaned slightly closer.
"But the truth..."
"...is that without your wife..."
"...you would've gone bankrupt before your thirtieth birthday."
Several guests instinctively lowered their phones.
The videos they had been recording suddenly told a completely different story.
Camila felt panic rising inside her.
She grabbed Mateo's arm.
"Say something."
"Tell them he's lying."
Mateo opened his mouth...
But no words came out.
Because every sentence Leonardo had spoken...
Was true.
An elderly banker standing near the stage quietly sighed.
"I remember."
"We all received the same phone call."
"The Mendoza family personally guaranteed Mateo's first credit line."
Another executive nodded.
"Without that guarantee..."
"No bank would've touched him."
The whispers grew louder.
People who had admired Mateo moments earlier now looked at him with disgust.
Valeria stared at her husband.
"So..."
"My father..."
"He saved you?"
Mateo couldn't meet her eyes.
She took another step.
"And every time you said..."
'Everything I have belongs to me...'
"You knew?"
Still...
Silence.
A single tear rolled down Valeria's cheek.
Not because of the affair.
Not because of Camila.
But because she finally understood something that had haunted her for years.
She had never been the burden.
She had been the foundation.
Leonardo quietly reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
He removed an old brown envelope.
Its edges were worn with age.
He handed it to Valeria.
"I promised your father..."
"...that I would only give you this..."
"...if the day ever came when you discovered the truth."
Valeria stared at the handwriting.
She recognized it instantly.
Her father's.
Her fingers trembled as she slowly opened the envelope.
Inside...
Was a handwritten letter.
And beneath it...
A sealed medical file.
Across the front...
One sentence was stamped in bold red ink.
CONFIDENTIAL DNA & FERTILITY REPORT
Valeria frowned.
"I don't understand..."
Leonardo's voice became softer than anyone had heard all evening.
"You were never infertile."
The ballroom froze.
Every guest stared in disbelief.
Valeria looked as though the world had stopped spinning.
"What...?"
Leonardo slowly nodded.
"Your father discovered the truth before he died."
"He hired private investigators."
"They uncovered everything."
"The clinic."
"The bribed technician."
"The falsified laboratory report."
Mateo's knees nearly gave way.
Leonardo looked directly into his eyes.
"The woman standing beside you..."
He glanced at Camila.
"...helped arrange it."
Camila gasped.
Her face drained of every trace of color.
Valeria slowly turned toward her lifelong best friend.
Her lips trembled.
"You knew..."
Camila took one frightened step backward.
"Valeria..."
"I can explain..."
But before she could say another word...
The hotel's giant LED screen behind the stage suddenly flickered to life.
Someone...
Had just connected a hidden video feed.
And the first face to appear...
May you like
Was the fertility doctor who had signed Valeria's fake diagnosis.
