Chapter 2 - The House of Broken Glass

The ranch owned by Doña Lola was not a grand estate like the Montero hacienda, but it possessed a quiet, ancient dignity. Stone walls covered in creeping ivy, towering oak trees that kept the air cool, and the scent of wild rosemary and earth.

As they sat by a wooden table inside the small, clean kitchen, Doña Lola poured Luciana a cup of hot herbal tea.

"You think your husband is a powerful man, Luciana," Doña Lola began, sitting across from her. "You think the Monteros are kings of this valley. But empires built on secrets are made of glass. One stone, and they shatter."

"I don't care about his empire," Luciana wept, her head in her hands. "I care about the truth. Am I really... am I really broken? Is it my fault?"

Doña Lola reached across the table and gently pulled Luciana’s hands away from her face. "Look at me. Three years ago, when you and Rodrigo went to that expensive clinic in Mexico City, who handled the paperwork? Who gave you the medical reports?"

Luciana frowned, trying to remember through the fog of her grief. "Rodrigo did. He went to pick up the final results alone. He came back devastated. He showed me the papers... they had the clinic’s official seal. They said my ovaries were dormant. That I was sterile."

Doña Lola let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Dr. Jacobo Silva. That was the doctor’s name, wasn't it?"

Luciana’s eyes widened. "How... how could you possibly know that?"

"Because Dr. Silva is Rodrigo’s first cousin," Doña Lola revealed, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And because twelve years ago, Rodrigo’s older brother, Mateo, was cast out of the family for the exact same reason. They claimed Mateo’s wife was barren. They disgraced her, drove her out of the town, and she ended her own life in despair. But the truth, Luciana, is much darker."

Doña Lola leaned in closer. "The Montero men carry a genetic curse. It is not the women who are barren. It is them. Rodrigo’s father was sterile; Rodrigo’s uncle was sterile. The only reason Rodrigo and his siblings exist is because their mother used secret donors to protect the family name. And Rodrigo? He is completely, irreversibly sterile. He has known this since he was eighteen years old."

The room seemed to spin. Luciana’s breath caught in her throat. "No... that can't be. Elena is pregnant! She is carrying his child! He said so himself!"

Doña Lola smiled, a cold, knowing expression. "Exactly. If Rodrigo cannot have children, then whose baby is Elena carrying?"

The realization hit Luciana like a lightning bolt.

Elena was pregnant. But not with Rodrigo’s child.

"They are building a paradise of lies," Doña Lola said, her eyes flashing. "Elena has fooled him to secure her place in the Montero fortune. And Rodrigo has framed you to protect his fragile, patriarchal pride. But we are going to expose them. Both of them. In front of the entire valley."
