Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

The speakers rumbled, and then, Elena’s voice filled the courtyard, loud, clear, and damning:

"Rodrigo is starting to ask questions about the due date... The fool is so desperate for an heir... he’d believe a miracle... Once the baby is born and the estate is secured in your name, we’ll handle him..."

And then, Arturo’s recognizable voice followed:

"Just keep playing the loving, pregnant wife..."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Rodrigo stood frozen, his eyes slowly turning from Luciana to Elena, and then to his foreman, Arturo, who was standing near the bar. Arturo’s face was white as a sheet; he slowly began backing away toward the exit, but two security guards blocked his path.

"Elena..." Rodrigo whispered, his voice trembling not with anger, but with a terrifying, quiet madness. "Whose baby is it?"

Elena fell to her knees, sobbing, grabbing the hem of Rodrigo’s trousers. "Rodrigo, please! It was a mistake! I did it for us! I wanted to give you the family you wanted! I love you!"

"You betrayed me," Rodrigo breathed, his pride, his name, his entire masculine identity crumbling to dust in front of the most influential people in the state. "With my own foreman..."

"And you betrayed yourself, Rodrigo," Doña Lola’s voice chimed in as she stepped forward. She looked down at him with centuries of accumulated anger. "You destroyed lives to protect a lie. You drove your brother’s wife to her grave. You tried to destroy Luciana. But the land doesn't forget. And neither do I."

Rodrigo looked at Doña Lola, his eyes widening in sudden, horrific recognition. "You... you are Dolores... Mateo’s mother-in-law. The one who fled after his wife died..."

"Yes," Doña Lola said, her voice cold as ice. "I am the mother of the girl your family murdered with your rumors and your fake medical reports. I waited twelve years for this night. I waited for you to destroy yourself."

The guests began to leave in droves, murmuring in disgust. Don Aurelio and Doña Refugio rushed toward Luciana, their faces filled with regret.

"Luciana, my daughter..." her father stammered, his eyes wet with tears. "We didn't know... please, come home..."

Luciana looked at her parents. Her heart did not ache for them anymore. She had outgrown their small world.

"No, Father," Luciana said gently but firmly, pulling her hand away from his grasp. "You chose the town’s gossip over your own blood. You have your house, and I have my path. Do not call me your daughter again."

She turned her back on them, walking past the weeping Elena, past the ruined, catatonic Rodrigo, and walked out of the hacienda gates into the cool, dark night.
