CHAPTER 8 – The Final Name on the Death List

The massive front doors burst open.

A cold wind swept through the ballroom as dozens of armed soldiers stood perfectly still.

No one fired.

No one moved.

Their leader stepped forward with slow, confident footsteps.

He removed his black gloves.

Then... his mask.

The room gasped.

Richard stared in disbelief.

"...Michael?"

Amelia's eyes widened.

"It can't be."

Standing before them was Michael Whitmore...

Richard's older brother.

The man everyone believed had died in a helicopter crash twenty-two years ago.

Michael smiled.

"I've been dead for a very long time."

Vanessa, still in handcuffs, lowered her head.

"Welcome back, sir."

Richard felt sick.

"You've been working for him all along?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Every decision I made..."

"Every lie..."

"Every betrayal..."

"...was his plan."

Michael slowly walked toward Ethan.

His soldiers immediately aimed their rifles at anyone who moved.

He crouched in front of the frightened boy.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Ethan held Amelia's hand tighter.

"What do you want from me?"

Michael smiled gently.

"I don't want to hurt you."

"I need you."

He turned toward everyone in the room.

"Thirty years ago, Project Phoenix was created to become the world's first autonomous defense intelligence."

"It could control satellites..."

"Military networks..."

"Global financial systems..."

"And every nuclear launch protocol."

The guests stood frozen.

"It was never a company project," Michael continued.

"It was designed to control the future."

Richard whispered,

"My father... built a weapon."

Michael laughed.

"No."

"He built a god."

Silence.

Then Harrison spoke.

"So you killed everyone who knew the truth."

Michael's smile disappeared.

"I didn't kill everyone."

"I spared one."

He looked directly at Amelia.

"You."

Amelia's voice shook.

"Why?"

"Because I knew one day..."

"...you would lead me back to Ethan."

Michael raised the black Phoenix Key.

"The key unlocks the vault."

"Ethan unlocks the system."

"But there is still one final security lock."

Richard frowned.

"What security lock?"

Michael slowly pointed toward the old wooden music box.

"The music box."

Everyone looked at it.

Michael smiled.

"That wasn't your mother's keepsake."

"It was the vault itself."

Before anyone could react...

Ethan accidentally dropped the music box onto the marble floor.

CRACK!

The wood split open.

Hidden inside...

Was a tiny golden chip no larger than a fingernail.

The lights throughout the mansion instantly turned blue.

A mechanical female voice echoed through every room.

"Phoenix Core Detected."

"Final heir confirmed."

"System awakening in 60 seconds."

Michael's smile widened.

After thirty years...

He had finally won.

But Amelia slowly began to smile too.

Because Michael had overlooked one thing.

The golden chip had already recognized its true owner...

And it wasn't the man holding the key.

It was the little boy standing in front of him.

As the countdown reached 59... 58... 57...

Ethan looked at the glowing chip...

May you like

Then quietly spoke five words that made Michael's face turn white.

"Mom... I remember everything now."
