Chapter 1 - The Shadow Steps Forward

The pressure on Kara’s windpipe tightened. The edges of her vision began to blur into a terrifying, fractured gray. She could see the manic triumph in Liam’s bloodshot eyes—a pathetic, broken man trying to steal the sky from a woman who had finally learned how to breathe.

"You're nothing without my permission, Kara!" Liam hissed, his grip turning white-knuckle tight. "I made you! I can break you!"

But Liam Mercer didn't see the heavy iron door of Stonebridge Coffee Roasters swing open. He didn't see the sudden, absolute silence that swept over the freelancers, the baristas, and the tourists like a sudden frost.

The temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

A man stepped through the threshold. He wasn't wearing a coat against the autumn chill; his tailored, three-piece charcoal suit fit his broad shoulders flawlessly. His dark hair was combed back, exposing a face carved from granite, and eyes that held the cold, unyielding depth of the Atlantic Ocean.

Daniel Rourke had arrived.

He didn't yell. He didn't run. He walked with a slow, predatory cadence that made the very floorboards seem to submit beneath his leather oxfords. Behind him, two massive men in dark coats slid into the café, silently locking the exit doors and turning the open sign to Closed.

Liam was too consumed by his own pathetic rage to notice until a voice, deep and resonant as a funeral bell, echoed through the quiet space.

"Take your hands off my wife."

Liam stiffened. The sheer authority in the voice forced him to turn his head. When his eyes locked onto Daniel, a flicker of recognition—and then primal, mammalian fear—crossed his face. Everyone in New York knew that face from the business tabloids, but those who operated in the underbelly knew the terrifying truth: Daniel Rourke did not negotiate. He eliminated.

"Who the hell are you?" Liam blustered, trying to maintain his grip on Kara’s throat, using her as a shield. "Stay back! This is between us! She’s my—"

Before Liam could finish the word property, Daniel closed the distance. The movement was so blindingly fast, so impossibly fluid, it looked like a shadow tearing through the air.

Daniel’s hand shot out. His fingers clutched Liam’s wrist. With a single, sickening CRACK, Daniel twisted the bones.

Liam shrieked, a high-pitched, pathetic sound as his grip shattered. He stumbled backward, clutching his broken wrist to his chest. Kara collapsed forward, coughing violently, her lungs desperate for oxygen.

But she didn't hit the marble floor. Daniel caught her with infinite tenderness, his massive arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His other hand gently cupped the back of her head, pressing her face into the crook of his neck.

"I’ve got you, mo stór," Daniel murmured, his voice suddenly thick with an agonizingly sweet warmth meant only for her. "Breathing now. Just breathe for me."

As Kara gasped, clutching Daniel’s lapels, her purse slid off the table. It hit the ground, spilling its contents. Out tumbled the velvet pouch, opening just enough to reveal the pristine, white-and-gray ultrasound image.

Daniel’s eyes drifted downward. He saw the tiny, curled shape of a child. He saw the bold text on the medical paper: Patient: Kara Rourke. Weeks: 8.

The Wolf of the Harbor froze. For a fraction of a second, the absolute monarch of New York’s criminal underworld looked entirely human, his chest hitching as the realization slammed into him. He was going to be a father.

Then, he looked back at Liam, who was whimpering on the floor, nursing his shattered wrist.

The humanity vanished from Daniel's eyes. What remained was a demon.

THE HOOK: Daniel knows. He knows about the baby, and he knows exactly who put his hands on the mother of his unborn child. Liam Mercer didn't just break a restraining order; he signed his own death warrant in blood.
