Chapter 2 - Secrets in the Dark

"Get her to the car. Call Dr. Vance. If there is a single scratch on her, I will tear this city apart brick by brick," Daniel commanded, his voice a low growl as he handed Kara over to his most trusted lieutenant, Declan.
"Daniel, no..." Kara choked out, her voice raw, her fingers desperately dragging against his sleeve. "Don't leave me. Please."
"I am right behind you, my love," Daniel whispered, kissing her forehead, his lips lingering on her skin. "I just have to clean up a spill."
The moment the café doors closed behind Kara, Daniel turned around. The two guards stood like sentinels by the door. Liam was crawling backward, his eyes wide with horror, leaving a trail of sweat on the floor.
"Do you know who I am, Liam?" Daniel asked, walking over to the counter, calmly picking up a clean napkin, and wiping a stray drop of Kara's spilled coffee from his leather shoe.
"You're Rourke," Liam wept, his voice cracking. "The shipping guy. Look, man, she lied to you! She’s a manipulative bitch! She ruined my career, she—"
Daniel didn't let him finish. He kicked Liam squarely in the ribs. The force of the blow lifted Liam off the ground, sending him crashing into a wooden partition.
"You broke her cheekbone three years ago," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "I spent six months looking for you after we met. You hid well. But you came back. And today, you touched her throat. While she carries my child."
Liam’s breath caught. "P-pregnant?"
"You don't get to speak that word," Daniel said. He leaned down, grabbing Liam by his greasy hair, forcing him to look into eyes that promised eternal damnation. "Death is too peaceful for what you’ve done. You are going to learn what happens when you anger the monsters in the dark."
Daniel stood up and adjusted his cuffs. "Declan! Take him to the dry docks. Keep him alive until I arrive."
As the guards dragged a screaming, pleading Liam out through the back alley, Daniel picked up the velvet pouch from the floor. He pulled out the ultrasound photo. His thumb brushed over the small gray image of his child.
His phone rang. It was Declan.
"Boss," Declan’s voice sounded tight. "We’ve got a problem. We were tracking Mercer's recent movements while you were inside. He didn't just wander into the West Village by accident. He’s been staying at a safehouse in Queens."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "Whose safehouse?"
May you like
"The Moretti family," Declan replied. "Sal Moretti bought him that whiskey. Sal Moretti gave him the location of the café. Boss... it’s a trap."
THE HOOK: Liam Mercer wasn't just a desperate, abusive ex-boyfriend acting on impulse. He was a weapon, wrapped in a tragic past, aimed directly at the heart of the Wolf of the Harbor by his greatest rival.
