Chapter 6 - The Harbor's Grace

Liam stared up at Kara, his body shaking uncontrollably. The rain washed the blood down his face, making him look smaller, pathetic, like a drowned rat trapped in a corner.

"Kara..." he whimpered, reaching out a hand. "Please. Tell him to stop. You loved me once."

Kara looked down at him. The man who had broken her bones, who had stolen her peace, who had tried to choke the life out of her only twelve hours ago. For three years, she had run from his memory. She had flinched at shadows.

But looking at him now, standing beside a man who loved her enough to burn a city to keep her safe, she felt absolutely nothing. No fear. No hatred. Only pity.

She slowly lowered the gun.

"I don't need to shoot you, Liam," Kara said, her voice clear and resonant over the sound of the falling rain. "And I won't let my husband kill you either. You aren't worth the stain on his soul. Or the time he would lose spending it with our child."

Liam blinked, stunned. "You're... you're letting me go?"

Daniel moved to protest, his jaw clenching, but Kara placed a gentle hand on his chest. The touch was magic; the tension in Daniel’s massive frame melted instantly. He looked down at her, his eyes softening in absolute devotion.

"We aren't letting you go," Kara told Liam, her voice turning ice-cold. "Look behind you."

From the darkness of the harbor entrance, three black-and-white sedans rolled in, their sirens silent but their red and blue lights flashing against the wet asphalt. Federal agents stepped out, led by an attorney holding a thick manila folder.

"Liam Mercer and Salvatore Moretti," the lead agent called out. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, racketeering, and violation of federal protective orders. We have the full paper trail of the funds transferred from the Moretti accounts to yours, Mr. Mercer."

Daniel had delivered the evidence. He hadn't just used brute force; he had used his immense legal and financial power to ensure neither man would ever see the sun as a free citizen again. Moretti would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, and Liam would be locked away in a cell where no shadow could ever protect him.

As the feds dragged the screaming, cursing men away into the night, the harbor fell quiet once more.

One Year LaterThe golden afternoon sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Tribeca penthouse, turning the walls a warm, pale honey.

Kara sat in a rocking chair in the center of the newly finished nursery, holding a small, dark-haired boy wrapped in a soft blue blanket. The baby had his father’s striking, intense eyes, but his mother’s gentle smile.

The nursery door opened quietly. Daniel walked in, stripped of his armor—no tie, his sleeves rolled up, his face relaxed and peaceful. He walked over, kneeling beside the chair, and gently pressed his lips to his son’s forehead.

"Is he asleep?" Daniel whispered.

"Just standard resting," Kara smiled, leaning her head against Daniel's shoulder. "He’s stubborn. Just like his father."

Daniel smiled, his large hand moving to cup Kara’s cheek, his thumb brushing over the skin that was smooth, unblemished, and completely healed.

"I have a surprise for you," Daniel said softly.

"Another one? Daniel, you already bought the bakery down the street because I liked their croissants."

"Not a bakery," Daniel murmured, pulling a small deed from his pocket. "Stonebridge Coffee Roasters. The café in the West Village."

Kara blinked. "You bought the café?"

"I bought the whole block," Daniel corrected, a trace of the Wolf’s ruthless arrogance showing in his smile, though his eyes were pure warmth. "I had the café remodeled. The corner booth beside the fiddle-leaf fig is permanently reserved for you. And I hired a permanent security team to manage the front door."

He leaned in, kissing her softly, deeply, sealing a promise that had been kept through fire and blood.

"The shadows of New York belong to me, Kara," Daniel whispered against her lips. "But I belong to you. And no one will ever scare you in this city again."

Kara looked out the window at the sprawling skyline of Manhattan. The city looked vast, sharp, and beautiful. But she wasn't afraid. She held her son tight, wrapped in the arms of the man who ruled the dark, knowing that they were finally, completely safe.
