Chapter 5 - A Debt in Blood and Shadows

The rain began to fall over the New York Harbor, slicking the rusted containers and turning the concrete into a mirror of the dark sky.

Sal Moretti stood inside an abandoned crane control tower overlooking the water. Beside him, Liam Mercer was tied to a chair, his face beaten bloody, trembling like a leaf in the wind.

"You told me Rourke would be broken!" Liam whined, coughing up copper-tasting spit. "He broke my wrist! He’s going to kill me!"

"Shut up, you idiot," Moretti snapped, looking through binoculars at the perimeter. "Rourke is coming alone. He has to. I have his entire shipping manifest leaked to the feds if he doesn't show. He loses his empire tonight, or he dies here."

Suddenly, the floodlights illuminating the dry dock snapped off.

Darkness swallowed the harbor.

The only sound was the howling wind and the rhythmic slap of the waves against the hulls of the ships.

"Sir!" a guard shouted through the radio. "The gates—they’re open! There’s no one there—"

The radio cut to static. Then came the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor.

One by one, Moretti’s men vanished into the shadows. No gunshots. No explosions. Just the terrifying efficiency of a apex predator reclaiming his territory.

Moretti pulled his own revolver, his arrogance evaporating. He grabbed Liam by the hair, dragging the chair toward the door. "If he comes through that door, I blast you first, then him!"

The heavy steel door of the control tower didn't open.

Instead, the metal wall behind them groaned. A massive forklift rammed through the corrugated iron, tearing the wall away. The wind and rain howled into the room.

Standing on the platform of the forklift, completely drenched in rain, was Daniel Rourke. He held a heavy iron chain in one hand and a combat knife in the other. His eyes were entirely black in the dark night.

"Moretti," Daniel said, his voice cutting through the storm. "You thought you could threaten my family and keep your life?"

Moretti aimed his gun at Daniel, but before he could pull the trigger, a red laser dot appeared on his chest. From the shadows of the adjacent shipping containers, Declan and four snipers stood revealed.

"Drop it, Sal," Daniel said softly. "Or you die before your finger moves a millimeter."

Moretti dropped the gun, his hands trembling. "Rourke... please. It was just business. The piers—you can have them! All of them!"

"It ceased being business the moment you gave him her location," Daniel said, pointing the knife at Liam.

Daniel walked over to Liam, who was sobbing, begging for mercy. Daniel didn't look angry anymore; he looked like a judge delivering a final sentence. He sliced the ropes binding Liam to the chair.

Liam fell to his knees. "Daniel, please! I’ll leave! I’ll go to Europe! I’ll never look at her again!"

"You're right. You won't," Daniel said. He didn't stab him. He didn't shoot him. He simply stepped back, allowing the shadows to part.

From behind Daniel, a figure stepped out of the rain, wearing a heavy black coat.

It was Kara.

She hadn't gone to the Adirondacks. She had demanded Declan bring her here. She needed to see the end of her ghosts.

THE HOOK: Kara stood before her abuser, holding the gun she had used to protect her child. Liam looked up at her, realizing that the helpless woman he had terrorized for years was gone forever. But what she did next shocked even Daniel.
