CHAPTER 2 — The Prisoner Who Had No Name

"I didn't abandon you."

Michael's voice trembled.

"I was stolen."

The church remained completely silent.

Emily slowly stepped closer.

"What do you mean... stolen?"

Michael looked at every guest before speaking.

"Eighteen years ago, my boat never sank."

"It was boarded."

Gasps spread through the room.

Richard's hands tightened into fists.

Michael continued.

"I woke up inside a cargo container."

"No phone."

"No passport."

"No identity."

"They had already declared me dead before I even escaped."

Victoria whispered,

"Who did this?"

Michael turned slowly toward Richard.

"The man who wanted everything I owned."

Richard laughed loudly.

"This is insane."

"You have no proof."

Michael nodded.

"You're right."

"I didn't."

"Until six months ago."

He opened the worn leather bag again.

This time...

He removed dozens of old photographs.

Shipping docks.

Hidden warehouses.

Cargo manifests.

Passport copies.

Security camera images.

One picture made Victoria scream.

It showed Richard...

Standing beside the very fishing boat Michael supposedly disappeared from.

The date stamp matched the exact day Michael vanished.

Richard immediately shouted,

"Fake!"

"Photos can be edited!"

Michael simply smiled.

"I knew you'd say that."

Then he looked toward the back of the church.

"You can come in now."

The heavy doors opened again.

Three people entered.

An elderly FBI investigator.

A retired Coast Guard captain.

And a woman wearing a dark navy suit.

She carried a silver briefcase.

"I am Special Agent Rebecca Hayes."

"I've spent the last fourteen months reopening Michael Carter's disappearance."

The guests erupted into whispers.

Rebecca placed the briefcase on a nearby table.

Inside...

Thousands of pages.

Financial records.

Wire transfers.

Property deeds.

Insurance documents.

Every payment Richard had secretly received after Michael disappeared.

Then came the final document.

A life insurance policy.

Fifteen million dollars.

Signed...

Just two weeks before Michael vanished.

Victoria's face drained of color.

"I never knew..."

Rebecca looked directly at her.

"Because your signature was forged."

Richard suddenly stepped backward.

"I want my lawyer."

Rebecca calmly replied,

"He's already outside."

"So are the officers with your arrest warrant."

Richard's confident smile disappeared forever.

He looked toward the side exit.

Too late.

Police officers quietly entered from every door.

Emily couldn't stop crying.

Everything she believed about her childhood...

Was falling apart.

Then Michael said something that shocked everyone even more.

"Richard isn't the biggest secret."

Emily looked confused.

"What could possibly be worse?"

Michael slowly held up the DNA report.

"This document..."

"Doesn't only identify me."

"It identifies someone else."

Someone...

Who had been living inside this family for eighteen years...

Under the wrong name.
