CHAPTER 6 — The Twin Buried Deeper Than the Lie

Grace felt the room spin.

“I had a twin?”

Dr. Mercer nodded.

“A boy.”

Victoria nearly collapsed when Rebecca told her.

For twenty-one years, she had mourned one dead baby.

Now she learned there had been two.

Michael slammed his fist against the wall.

“Where is my son?”

Dr. Mercer began sobbing.

“I don’t know.”

“Richard handled the girl.”

“Whitfield handled the boy.”

Grace stared at him in horror.

“My adoptive father took my brother too?”

“No,” the doctor whispered.

“He made sure no one could trace him.”

Rebecca opened a new investigation immediately.

Old hospital files were pulled.

Sealed adoption papers were subpoenaed.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Judge Whitfield was taken into federal custody before sunset.

But unlike Richard, he did not look afraid.

As agents led him away, he looked at Grace and smiled.

“You should have stayed grateful.”

Grace stepped toward him.

“What did you do with my brother?”

The judge leaned close.

“You’ve met him.”

Then he was gone.

Those three words haunted the entire family.

You’ve met him.

Emily barely slept.

Grace replayed every person from her childhood.

Classmates.

Neighbors.

Family friends.

Servants.

Drivers.

Then, two days later, the answer arrived in the cruelest way possible.

Emily’s fiancĂ©, Daniel, came to the house carrying old photos from the wedding rehearsal.

He placed them on the kitchen table.

“I think you need to see this.”

In one photo, Grace stood beside him.

Same blue eyes.

Same jawline.

Same crescent-shaped birthmark behind the ear.

Emily stared at Daniel.

Her fiancé.

Her best friend.

The man she was supposed to marry.

Grace whispered,

“No
”

Daniel looked sick.

“My parents adopted me privately when I was a newborn.”

Michael slowly backed away.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Emily’s engagement ring suddenly felt like fire on her finger.

Rebecca confirmed it three days later.

Daniel was Grace’s twin brother.

Victoria and Michael’s stolen son.

Emily’s biological brother.

The wedding was over.

The love story became a nightmare.

Emily locked herself in her room and screamed into a pillow until her voice disappeared.

Daniel sat alone on the porch, unable to look anyone in the eye.

Grace stood between two families, broken by a truth none of them had chosen.

But Michael did not let the house fall apart.

He gathered them in the living room and said,

“Richard stole my life.”

“Whitfield stole my children.”

“But they do not get to steal what happens next.”

For the first time, Daniel called Victoria “Mom.”

She broke down in his arms.

Emily removed her engagement ring and placed it gently in Daniel’s palm.

“I loved you before I knew the truth,” she whispered.

“And I won’t hate you for something done to us.”

Daniel cried silently.

Grace took his hand.

Michael stood behind all three of his children.

Outside, reporters waited for scandal.

Inside, a family chose survival.

But one final secret remained.

Before Judge Whitfield went to prison, he sent Grace a single letter.

Inside were only six words:

Michael Carter knows more than he says.
