CHAPTER 3 â The Daughter Who Was Never Lost

Emily opened the DNA report with trembling hands.
The first page confirmed what her heart already knew.
Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.
Michael Carter was her biological father.
She burst into tears and embraced him again.
But Michael gently turned to the second page.
Emily's smile faded.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
Victoria grabbed the report.
She read one line.
Then another.
The paper slipped from her fingers.
"It's impossible..."
Rebecca Hayes picked it up and spoke softly.
"It isn't."
"The DNA comparison also confirms that Emily has a full biological sibling."
The church exploded into confusion.
Emily stared at her parents.
"I don't have a brother or sister."
Michael closed his eyes.
"You did."
"Until the day I disappeared."
Silence.
Victoria began shaking violently.
"I was pregnant."
"When Michael vanished... I went into premature labor."
"The doctors told me our baby died."
Rebecca opened another folder.
"The hospital records were altered."
"The child never died."
Emily couldn't breathe.
"Where is my sibling?"
Rebecca slowly turned toward Richard.
"He sold the baby."
A wave of horror swept through the church.
Richard lowered his head.
For the first time...
He looked defeated.
Years earlier, drowning in gambling debts and desperate to erase every trace of Michael Carter's legacy, Richard had bribed a corrupt doctor and an adoption broker. The newborn was declared dead on paper, then secretly adopted by another wealthy family in another state. Richard received a fortune for arranging the illegal adoption.
Emily whispered,
"My brother..."
"Or my sister..."
"They've been alive all this time?"
Michael nodded.
"We found them."
The church doors opened once more.
A young woman stepped inside.
She looked about twenty-one.
She had the same blue eyes.
The same smile.
The same tiny crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear that Emily had inherited from Michael.
She stopped only a few feet away.
"I've spent my whole life wondering why I never looked like my parents."
Tears streamed down her face.
"My name is Grace."
"But according to these records..."
"My name was supposed to be Grace Carter."
Emily ran toward her.
The two sisters embraced as if they had known each other forever.
Around them, guests wiped away tears.
Victoria fell to her knees, overwhelmed by grief and relief.
Police officers placed Richard in handcuffs.
As he was led away, he muttered,
"I only wanted the life Michael had."
Michael looked at him one last time.
"You stole eighteen years."
"But you couldn't steal the truth forever."
Months later, Grace legally reunited with the Carter family. Emily and her fiancé postponed their wedding so the entire family could heal together.
On the day they finally returned to the same church, Michael walked his daughter down the aisle.
This time...
No ghosts.
No lies.
No secrets.
May you like
Only a father who had come home after eighteen years...
Just in time to give his daughter away.
