Chapter 2 - THE DIGITAL GHOST

Headline: HE THOUGHT HE DELETED THE EVIDENCE—BUT THE TRAITOR LEFT A FOOTPRINT IN THE SHADOWS!
The private security bunker beneath the Moretti estate was bathed in cool blue light. Monitors covered the walls, displaying encrypted feeds from every corner of the compound.
Alejandro sat in the central command chair, a heavy leather jacket draped over his shoulders. His body was still shaking slightly from the residual adrenaline and epinephrine, but his brain was sharp, focused, and bloodthirsty. Beside him stood Maria and little Emma, whom Alejandro refused to let out of his sight.
"Scan the camera’s internal storage," Alejandro commanded his chief tech operative, Marcus. "I want to know who installed it, who accessed the feed, and where the live signal was bouncing."
Marcus’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. "The camera is a military-grade micro-lens. It doesn't write to a physical card, Boss. It streams encrypted data over a localized mesh network straight to a mobile receiver within a five-hundred-yard radius."
"Which means," Julian said from the corner, pacing anxiously, "the person who poisoned you was standing inside this house, watching the live stream on a phone, waiting for you to stop breathing."
Alejandro’s knuckles turned white around the armrests of his chair. "Extract the cached frames from the receiver buffer. Now."
Marcus typed frantically. "I'm bypassing the handshake protocol... pulling the last ten minutes of video before you ripped the unit out..."
The large central monitor flickered to life.
The video feed showed Alejandro’s empty study from an hour prior. The room was dark, lit only by the crackling fireplace.
Suddenly, a silhouette stepped into the frame.
The figure wore black velvet gloves and walked with a slight, almost imperceptible limp in the right knee. The person approached the crystal decanter, uncorked it, and poured a small vial of clear liquid into the aged red wine. Then, the figure turned toward the hidden camera, paused for a fraction of a second, and adjusted the lens.
"Enhance that frame!" Alejandro barked.
Marcus zoomed in on the reflection visible in the polished glass of the decanter.
The image was distorted, but the light from the fireplace illuminated a single, unmistakable detail: a gold signet ring adorned with a crest featuring a striking viper wrapped around a broken blade.
Julian took a sharp step back, his breath hitching in his throat. "The viper crest... That’s the seal of the Valenti Crime Family from Miami."
"The Valentis?" Bruno growled, pulling his sidearm. "They’re supposed to be our peace-treaty partners! They signed the truce last month!"
"They didn't act alone," Alejandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Look closer at the walking gait."
He pointed at the screen. The silhouette limped slightly as it turned away from the desk.
Alejandro slowly turned his head to look at Julian.
"Julian," Alejandro murmured softly. "You tore your right ACL in a ski accident three years ago, didn't you?"
The room went dead silent.
Julian’s face drained of all color. "Alejandro... you can't possibly think—I’ve been by your side for twenty years! I built this empire with you!"
"Then explain the ring," Alejandro said, standing up slowly.
"I lost that ring two weeks ago!" Julian pleaded, raising his hands in panic. "Someone stole it from my quarters! You’re being framed, Alejandro! Whoever poisoned you wanted us to tear each other apart from the inside!"
Before Alejandro could respond, little Emma pulled on his pant leg.
"Mr. Quiet Man," she whispered, pointing at the screen. "That man didn't drop the shiny bottle."
Alejandro knelt down to Emma’s eye level, his harsh expression instantly softening. "What do you mean, sweetheart?"
"When I was downstairs," Emma said, clutching her bunny, "I saw the tall man with the shiny shoes put the little bottle in the laundry chute before he went upstairs."
"The tall man with the shiny shoes?" Alejandro repeated.

He looked up at the security monitors. Standing at the front gate, directing incoming guard patrols, was the compound’s chief valet and quartermaster—a man who wore custom Italian leather dress shoes every single day.
"It wasn't Julian," Alejandro realized, his eyes burning with lethal realization. "It was Leo."
