Chapter 1 - THE RESURRECTION AND THE RECKONING

Headline: HE WOKE UP IN A POOL OF BLOOD AND POISON—BUT HIS SAVIOR WAS ONLY FOUR YEARS OLD!

The orange needle clicked home.

Emma’s tiny hand drove the auto-injector deep into Alejandro Moretti’s right thigh through the heavy wool of his bespoke trousers. She held it firmly, counting in her small, sweet voice: "One... two... three... four... five..."

A violent surge of epinephrine tore through the dying Don’s bloodstream.

Alejandro’s eyes snapped open, bloodshot and wide with primal terror. His chest heaved as his constricted airway snapped open in a harsh, roaring gasp. Air rushed back into his starved lungs like a tidal wave of fire. His massive body jerked against the Aubusson rug, scattering shattered crystal shards and bloody red wine.

He lunged upward into a sitting position, heart hammering against his ribs at two hundred beats per minute, sweat pouring down his pale face. He looked like a titan resurrected from the grave.

And then his wild, furious gaze landed on the floor beside him.

Sitting on her knees was a four-year-old girl in pink wool socks, clutching a floppy-eared stuffed rabbit. Beside her lay an empty pink EpiPen casing with a exposed needle.

"You... breathe now?" Emma whispered, her wide brown eyes full of innocent concern.

Alejandro’s mind reeled. The deadly anaphylaxis—a silent killer laced into his vintage Barolo—had been halted not by his private militia, not by his high-priced security team, but by the maid’s toddler.

"Emma...?" Alejandro’s voice was a ragged scrape.

Before she could answer, heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway. The mahogany study door banged open, and Bruno, Alejandro’s trusted head of security for over fifteen years, burst into the room with his pistol drawn. Close behind him was Julian, Alejandro’s right-hand counselor and childhood friend, his face pale with horror.

"Don Alejandro!" Bruno yelled, eyes sweeping the room. "We heard glass shatter—my God!"

Julian rushed forward, his eyes darting from the broken wine glass to the empty auto-injector in Emma’s hands. "What happened?! Did the child attack you?!"

"Keep your hands off her!" Alejandro roared, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of adrenaline and absolute authority. He placed a protective, trembling arm in front of Emma, pulling her close against his side. "She saved my life."

Silence crashed over the room like a physical blow.

Julian blinked, stunned. "Saved... saved your life? With that?"

"Poison," Alejandro growled, wiping blood-red wine from his lips. He looked at the shattered glass on the desk. "Someone laced the Barolo with peanut extract and neurotoxins. They knew my hidden allergy. They knew I’d die in minutes without sound."

Julian gasped, clutching his chest. "A traitor in the house... Don Alejandro, who had access to your private decanter?"

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. He reached down and gently cupped Emma’s cheek. "Where is your mother, little one?"

"Mommy was... downstairs," Emma whimpered, sensing the suffocating tension in the room. "She told me to stay in the basement..."

At that exact moment, the study door creaked open further. Emma’s mother, Emma Carter Sr., stood frozen in the doorway, her maid apron stained with bleach, her eyes wide with terror as she saw the Don covered in sweat and wine, holding her daughter.

"Emma!" the mother screamed, dropping to her knees. "Don Alejandro, please! Forgive her! She didn't mean to intrude—"

"Silence, Maria," Alejandro commanded softly, though his eyes burned with fierce intensity. "Your daughter didn't intrude. She performed a miracle."

He stood up, his tall, imposing frame towering over the room once more. But as he reached for his phone on the desk, his sleeve caught a hidden decorative panel on the antique bookshelf behind his chair.

Click.

A tiny, concealed lens clicked in the shadows behind a carved marble gargoyle.

Alejandro stopped cold. "What was that?"

Bruno frowned. "Don Alejandro, you ordered all cameras in this room disconnected six years ago."

"I did," Alejandro said slowly, his voice dropping an octave into pure lethals. "So why is there a red light blinking behind the mantelpiece?"

May you like

He stepped over the desk, reached behind the marble statue, and ripped out a micro-surveillance unit—a state-of-the-art, high-frequency camera transmitter that had been covertly wired directly into the study’s electrical feed.

"This camera isn't mine," Alejandro whispered, turning to face his inner circle. "Someone put this here to watch me die."
