Chapter 1

The snow swallowed Elena Montiel's scream before it could reach the road.

Just seconds earlier, she had begged her husband, Víctor Salgado, to stop arguing and head back to Toluca. She was only days away from giving birth, the freezing cold had numbed her legs, and a blizzard had wrapped Nevado de Toluca in a wall of white.

But Víctor was no longer arguing.

His face went completely blank.

Without warning, he placed both hands on Elena's shoulders and shoved her over the edge of the cliff.

She desperately tried to grab his jacket, a tree branch—anything. She found nothing but freezing air. Her body plunged several yards before crashing onto a rocky ledge covered in snow.

Pain shot through her ribs, and her wrist twisted at an unnatural angle. Even so, the very first thing she did was wrap both arms around her belly to protect her unborn child.

From below, she could barely make out two figures standing at the top.

Víctor remained at the edge of the cliff.

Beside him stood Renata del Valle—the woman who had spent months drinking coffee with Elena, touching her baby bump, and pretending to be her friend while secretly carrying on an affair with her husband.

"Is she moving?" Renata asked, her voice trembling.

Víctor let out a short laugh.

"For 900,000,000 pesos, she'd better not be."

Then they turned around and walked away.

Neither of them looked back.

For nearly two hours, Elena lay trapped beneath the snow. Every breath burned her lungs. The cold crept deeper into her body, and her baby's movements grew weaker and weaker.

"Stay with me, Julián," she whispered. "Please... don't leave me."

Just as darkness began closing in around her, a beam of light swept across the mountain.

It was a private helicopter.

A silver-haired man descended with a rescue team. He wasn't wearing a Civil Protection uniform—just a black overcoat and an expression that changed completely the moment he saw Elena's face.

She recognized him.

Years earlier, after her mother, Sofía Montiel, had passed away, Elena had discovered a hidden photograph and a letter that read:

"If you're ever in danger, find Adrián Cruz."

Adrián was the owner of Grupo Atlántico Seguros, the company managing Elena's multimillion-peso insurance policy.

And according to that letter...

He was also her biological father.

"Elena," he whispered, dropping to his knees beside her. "You're not going to die here."

At a private hospital in Toluca, doctors confirmed multiple fractures, hypothermia, and internal injuries. For what felt like an eternity, they searched for the baby's heartbeat.

Then...

A tiny rhythm appeared.

Weak.

But alive.

Adrián never left Elena's bedside until she finally opened her eyes.

"Víctor has already filed the insurance claim," he told her. "He said you slipped, and that you and the baby died in the storm."

Elena gripped the bedsheet.

"When did he file it?"

"Before the search operation was even over. He's demanding the immediate payout of 900,000,000 pesos."

Víctor believed he had erased his wife and unborn son forever.

He believed no one would ever question the perfect grieving widower.

Elena gently rested a hand on her bruised belly and smiled for the first time.
