Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIREThe flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the front of the Jardines del Recuerdo chapel in a manic, rhythmic strobe.

Víctor Salgado was hauled out of the building through a gauntlet of furious reporters and flashing camera lenses, his custom Tom Ford suit wrinkled and stained with dirt from where he had collapsed onto the floor. As they shoved him into the back of the patrol car, a microphone was shoved directly into his face.

"Mr. Salgado! Did you really try to murder your pregnant wife for nine hundred million pesos?!" shouted a local television reporter.

Víctor pulled his jacket over his head, screaming incoherently as the cruiser door slammed shut with a heavy, final thud.

Inside the chapel, the crowd had slowly dispersed, leaving only Elena, Adrián, and Detective Garza standing near the altar.

Garza closed his leather notebook and tucked it into his jacket pocket. "Well, Mrs. Salgado, we have more than enough evidence. Between the confession you recorded on your hidden wire during his interrogation prep, the banking records showing the wire transfers to Renata, and your direct eyewitness testimony, he's looking at a minimum of forty years for attempted aggravated murder, conspiracy, and insurance fraud. Renata is already cooperating with the district attorney's office to save her own skin."

"Let her talk," Adrián said, adjusting his cuffs. "Her testimony will only help ensure that Víctor never sees the light of day again."

Elena walked over to the empty mahogany casket, reached out, and pushed the heavy lid open with her good hand. She looked down at the lead weights resting inside, wrapped in blankets.

"He really thought he had buried me," Elena murmured, a bittersweet smile touching her lips as she gently rocked little Julián against her chest. "He thought money and deceit could wipe me off the earth like a smudge on a window."

"People like Víctor only understand one language, Elena," Adrián said, stepping up beside his daughter and placing a hand on her shoulder. "Power. And today, his entire world has been completely dismantled."

"Not completely," Elena corrected him, turning her head to look up at her father. "There's still Salgado & Associates. Víctor's architectural firm. The company he built by stepping on everyone around him, including my mother."

Adrián's eyes lit up with a sharp, approving gleam.

"Ah," Adrián smiled softly. "I was wondering when you were going to ask about that. While Víctor was sitting in the interrogation room crying over his fake grief, Grupo Atlántico quietly executed a hostile takeover of his primary corporate assets. Every single commercial property, every patent, every architectural contract he owned has already been transferred into a new holding trust."

Adrián reached into his overcoat pocket and pulled out a sleek black leather folder embossed with gold lettering, handing it to Elena.

"And who is the sole majority shareholder of that trust?" Adrián asked quietly.

Elena opened the folder. On the first page, under Beneficiary and Managing Director, her own name was printed in bold, elegant typography: Elena Montiel-Cruz.

"It's yours, Elena," Adrián said, his voice filled with deep, hard-earned pride. "Every last brick, every last cent. You are now the primary competitor of what used to be your husband's empire. And tomorrow morning, we are going to start dismantling his legacy piece by piece."

Elena stared down at the document, feeling the heavy weight of her past slip away, replaced by something much stronger: absolute, unyielding control.
