CHAPTER 1 — The Daughter Who Was Never Allowed To Choose

"You'll marry him."

The words echoed across the marble dining room.

Emma Lawson slowly lowered her fork.

Across the twenty-foot oak table...

Her father, Charles Lawson, billionaire founder of Lawson Financial Group, wasn't asking.

He was announcing.

Her mother calmly sipped expensive wine as though discussing tomorrow's weather.

"The wedding is in six weeks."

Emma blinked.

"I'm already engaged."

Silence.

Charles leaned back.

"No."

"You were engaged."

Emma felt her stomach tighten.

"Ryan and I have been together for six years."

"Ryan teaches public school."

Her father almost laughed.

"He earns less in a year than I spend maintaining the yacht."

Emma stood.

"I love him."

Charles folded his hands.

"Love doesn't buy security."

"It doesn't buy influence."

"It certainly doesn't inherit companies."

Emma's voice shook.

"So this is about business?"

"It has always been about business."

Her mother finally spoke.

"We sacrificed everything to build this family."

"You owe us."

Emma stared at them.

"Owe you?"

Charles slid a thick envelope across the table.

Inside...

Bank statements.

Apartment lease.

Car registration.

Graduate school tuition.

Every single expense from the last fifteen years.

Meticulously documented.

Total amount:

$2,843,716.

Emma's hands trembled.

"What is this?"

"A reminder."

Charles smiled coldly.

"Everything you own..."

"We paid for."

"The apartment?"

"Mine."

"The car?"

"Mine."

"Your investment account?"

"Mine."

"The trust fund?"

"Mine."

"The vacation house?"

"Mine."

He leaned forward.

"If you refuse this marriage..."

"You leave with absolutely nothing."

Emma looked at her mother.

Surely...

Surely she would stop this madness.

Instead...

Her mother nodded.

"You'll thank us someday."

Emma couldn't breathe.

Her entire adult life...

Every opportunity...

Every achievement...

Every dream...

Had been carefully purchased.

Not to help her.

To control her.

That evening she met Ryan in their favorite little café.

He smiled the moment he saw her.

Until she began crying.

"They're taking everything."

Ryan reached across the table.

"So let them."

"You don't understand."

"I'll have nothing."

Ryan squeezed her hand.

"You'll still have me."

Emma smiled sadly.

"You say that now."

Ryan quietly removed a small velvet box from his pocket.

It wasn't another engagement ring.

It was a simple silver key.

"Our first house."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

"I've been saving for years."

"It's tiny."

"It needs repairs."

"But..."

He smiled.

"It's ours."

For the first time that day...

Emma almost believed freedom was possible.

She didn't know...

Someone was photographing them through the café window.

Inside a black SUV...

Charles Lawson watched every second.

He looked at his private investigator.

"Destroy him."

The investigator hesitated.

"Completely?"

Charles never blinked.

May you like

"I want my daughter to discover what life looks like..."

"When money disappears."
