CHAPTER 4 â The Boardroom Trap

Charles Lawson did not beg.
Men like him never begged.
They threatened.
He stood at the end of the boardroom table, staring at Emma as if she were still the little girl who once asked permission to buy a dress.
"You think paper makes you powerful?"
Emma held the trust documents against her chest.
"No."
She looked around the room.
"The truth does."
Charles laughed coldly.
"You have no idea what this company is."
Then he turned to the board.
"Remove her."
No one moved.
His face darkened.
"I said remove her."
The lead attorney cleared his throat.
"Mr. Lawson, you no longer have authority here."
Charles slammed his fist onto the table.
"I built this empire!"
Judge Harper stepped forward.
"No, Charles."
"Your father built it."
"And you spent thirty years hiding that fact."
Emma's mother, Evelyn, stood near the door, trembling.
For decades, she had worn diamonds like armor.
But now her hands were empty.
Her wedding ring lay on the boardroom table.
Charles turned to her.
"You did this."
Evelyn whispered, "No."
"You did."
For the first time, Emma saw fear in her mother's eyes.
Not fear of poverty.
Fear of the man she had obeyed for half her life.
Charles pointed at Emma.
"You think Ryan loves you?"
He smiled cruelly.
"He loved your last name."
Emma froze.
Charles reached into his briefcase and threw photos across the table.
Ryan meeting a woman outside a courthouse.
Ryan signing papers.
Ryan accepting an envelope.
Emma's breath caught.
"What is this?"
Charles leaned closer.
"Your perfect little teacher made a deal."
Emma looked at Ryan, who had just entered the room behind her.
His face went pale.
Charles smiled.
"Tell her."
Ryan swallowed.
Emma turned slowly.
"Ryan?"
The room went silent.
And then Ryan whispered...
"I was trying to protect you."
Emma stepped back.
May you like
But Charles laughed.
"That is what guilty men always say."
