CHAPTER 2 — The Price Of Obedience

Three days later...

Ryan lost his job.

Budget cuts.

According to the principal.

By Friday...

The bank canceled the mortgage approval.

On Saturday...

His truck was repossessed.

Monday morning...

His landlord informed him the building had suddenly been sold.

He had thirty days to leave.

Everything happened too perfectly.

Too quickly.

Emma stared at the growing list of disasters.

"This isn't coincidence."

Ryan forced a smile.

"We'll figure it out."

But things became worse.

Every company Emma interviewed with suddenly rejected her.

Even firms that had already promised an offer.

One HR manager accidentally whispered before hanging up...

"I'm sorry."

"Your father called."

Emma's blood froze.

She drove directly to Lawson Tower.

Security opened every door.

Everyone bowed.

Her father waited inside his office overlooking Manhattan.

"I warned you."

Emma slammed rejection letters onto his desk.

"You ruined our lives."

Charles barely looked up.

"No."

"I simply reminded the world who owns the doors you were trying to open."

"You can't do this!"

"I already have."

Emma shouted.

"You don't love me."

Charles remained perfectly calm.

"Love?"

"I've given you everything."

"The best schools."

"The finest vacations."

"The safest future."

"You mistake control for cruelty."

Emma stared at him in disbelief.

"No."

"You mistake ownership for parenting."

The room fell silent.

Charles slowly opened a drawer.

Inside rested a legal document.

"I expected this conversation."

He pushed it toward her.

"If you marry Daniel Prescott..."

"You become vice president."

"You receive your trust immediately."

"A penthouse."

Company shares.

Private jet access.

An estate in Aspen.

"If you marry Ryan..."

He flipped another page.

"You receive nothing."

"No inheritance."

"No trust."

"No health insurance through the family."

"No financial support."

"And one more thing..."

Emma looked up.

Charles smiled.

"You'll never see your grandmother again."

Emma's heart stopped.

"What?"

"I own the nursing facility."

"I decide who visits."

Her voice broke.

"You would use Grandma against me?"

"I use leverage."

Emma walked out without another word.

That night...

She visited the nursing home anyway.

The receptionist stopped her.

"I'm sorry."

"We have strict instructions."

Emma watched through the glass doors...

Her eighty-four-year-old grandmother sitting alone...

Knitting a tiny blue sweater.

Waiting.

Believing her granddaughter had abandoned her.

Emma collapsed in tears.

Across the street...

A luxury sedan watched silently.

Inside...

Her grandmother wasn't alone.

An elderly man sitting beside her quietly removed his hat.

He wasn't another patient.

He was retired Federal Judge William Harper.

And he had just witnessed everything.

He looked toward Emma through the window.

Then quietly whispered...

"So Charles finally crossed the line."

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out an old leather folder.

Inside...

Were documents hidden for thirty years.

Documents proving...

Lawson Financial Group had never truly belonged to Charles.

And Emma...

Was about to inherit something her parents never imagined.

May you like

Not their fortune.

But the truth that could erase it forever.
