Chapter 3 - The Shadow Council

The light inside the bunker vanished into absolute darkness.
Mara gasped, instinctively dropping to her knees as the heavy air grew tight and thick. "Adrian!"
"Stay low!" Adrian's voice rang out from the darkness, calm but sharp as a razor. A split second later, the blue beam of his tactical light sliced through the dust. He was already at the door, pressing his palm against the heavy iron frame. "The hydraulic lock was triggered from the outside. Somebody monitored our arrival."
"The Escalades," Mara realized, horror creeping up her spine. "Your security detail..."
"Either dead, or bought," Adrian said coldly.
Suddenly, the central holographic table flickered to life, casting a sickly cyan glow across the room. A digitized, distorted voice filled the chamber through hidden speakers embedded in the ceiling.
"Hello, Adrian. Hello, little Mara."
Mara stared at the light. A digital silhouette materialized above the table—a hooded figure whose face was obscured by an algorithmic blur.
"Who are you?" Mara demanded, standing up and stepping toward the light.
"I am the architect of your misery, my dear," the voice rasped, modulated beyond recognition. "Your father was a brilliant man, Arthur. Too brilliant for his own good. He realized twenty years ago that the crime families of New York weren't running this city—they were merely middle-management for an syndicate known as The Shadow Council."
Adrian walked over to the console, his eyes narrowed. "The Council is a myth. A campfire story told to keep street bosses in line."
"Is it?" The figure chuckled, a cold, metallic sound. "Arthur spent his life designing the infrastructure that allowed us to move billions in blood money without touching a bank. But when he tried to erase the blueprints—when he tried to set you free, Adrian, and pull Mara out of the crosshairs—he had to be eliminated."
"You didn't kill him," Mara blurted out, her mind piecing together the cryptic notes her father had left behind. "He faked his death. He used the car fire upstate to slip off the grid!"
"He tried," the voice corrected. "He survived the fire, yes. But he didn't escape us. Arthur Bell has been sitting in a cell three hundred feet below the East River for five years, Mara. Alive. Working for us under compulsion. Every defense system, every syndicate stronghold, every digital trap in this city was designed by your father's hand."
Mara’s hands clutched the edge of the steel table. He's alive. Her father wasn't a ghost. He was a prisoner.
"Why tell us this now?" Adrian demanded, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon.
"Because Arthur left a fail-safe," the silhouette revealed. "A master override code that can dismantle our entire network in a single second. He encrypted it into Mara’s DNA and buried the receiver inside your family’s bloodline, Adrian. He knew that the only way the code could ever be activated was if the daughter of the Architect and the Boss of the Vale Syndicate stood in the same room, bound by blood and survival."
The holographic table shifted. A countdown timer appeared in bright crimson numbers: 05:00... 04:59... 04:58...

"The room you are standing in is rigged with thermite charges," the voice said softly. "You have five minutes to figure out how Arthur locked this vault, or you will burn together beneath the mud of Manhattan."
The line clicked off. The hologram vanished, leaving only the blood-red countdown timer ticking away on the console.
