CHAPTER 1 — "The Girl Everyone Laughed At Walked Into the Most Powerful Room in the City..."

The loudest sound inside the Grand Sterling Ballroom wasn't the orchestra.

It was the slap.

A crystal champagne flute crashed onto the marble floor as twenty-three-year-old Emily Carter staggered backward, one trembling hand pressed against her burning cheek.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

Nearly four hundred of the city's richest guests turned to watch.

At the center of the room stood Victoria Ashford, wrapped in a custom-made crimson gown worth more than Emily earned in two years.

Victoria didn't even look angry.

She looked entertained.

"You call this service?" she sneered.

"You spilled wine on my husband. Do you have any idea what this suit costs?"

Emily lowered her head immediately.

"I'm... I'm so sorry, ma'am..."

She hadn't spilled anything.

Another guest had bumped into her from behind.

But nobody cared about the truth.

Not in a room where billionaires decided what the truth should be.

Victoria grabbed Emily's serving tray and dumped every remaining champagne glass onto the floor.

Glass exploded everywhere.

"Get on your knees and clean it."

Silence.

Every waiter froze.

The hotel manager whispered urgently.

"Do it... please..."

Emily slowly knelt onto the sharp pieces of crystal.

Tiny cuts opened across her palms.

Blood mixed with champagne.

Phones quietly began recording.

No one stepped forward.

Not because they agreed.

Because everyone feared the Ashford family.

For nearly forty years, Richard Ashford had built Ashford Global into one of America's largest financial empires.

Politicians respected him.

Judges feared him.

Banks obeyed him.

People often joked that if Richard wanted winter to arrive early, Wall Street would make it snow.

Victoria loved reminding people of that.

She leaned closer.

"Girls like you should remember where you belong."

Laughter rippled through several wealthy guests.

Emily kept wiping the floor without saying a word.

Inside her apron pocket rested something wrapped carefully inside an old cloth.

A photograph.

Folded so many times its edges were beginning to disappear.

She touched it instinctively.

The only thing her mother had protected until her final breath.

A quiet voice suddenly echoed inside her memory.

"Promise me... no matter how painful it becomes... find the man in that picture."

Emily swallowed the lump in her throat.

"I promised, Mom..."

She stood.

"I'm sorry for disturbing your evening."

She turned to leave.

Then Victoria laughed.

"Oh no."

"We're not finished."

She grabbed Emily's wrist.

The old photograph slipped from Emily's pocket.

It floated gently through the air...

...and landed directly at Richard Ashford's polished shoes.

He casually bent down.

Picked it up.

Looked at it.

His face drained of color.

His breathing stopped.

The smiling young man inside the faded photograph...

...was him.

Twenty-five years younger.

Holding a newborn baby in his arms.

May you like

And written across the back, in faded blue ink, were seven words that shattered his world forever.

"For our daughter... if anything happens to me."
