CHAPTER 4 — "She Thought the Nightmare Was Over... Until a Stranger Walked Into the Funeral Carrying a Second Photograph."

The story should have ended with tears.

Instead...

It became a war.

One week after Victoria's public downfall, hundreds of reporters surrounded Ashford Manor. Every major news outlet wanted the same photograph—the billionaire embracing the daughter he never knew existed.

Headlines exploded across the country.

BILLIONAIRE FINDS SECRET DAUGHTER AFTER 25 YEARS.

OLD PHOTO DESTROYS POWERFUL FAMILY DYNASTY.

Inside the mansion, however, nobody was celebrating.

Richard couldn't forgive himself.

Every room reminded him of Sarah.

The music she loved.

The paintings she once admired.

The empty future they should have shared.

Emily moved into the guest wing only because Richard begged her.

She refused every luxury.

She continued wearing inexpensive clothes.

She even insisted on working at the small neighborhood café where she had been employed before.

"I've lived without money my whole life," she quietly told him.

"I don't want wealth to change who I am."

Richard admired her even more.

But someone else hated her.

The remaining members of the Ashford family.

Richard's younger brother, Edward Ashford, arrived unexpectedly with several lawyers.

"This girl has manipulated you."

Richard looked at him coldly.

"She's my daughter."

"You only have a DNA report."

Edward smiled.

"And fortunes much larger than yours have been stolen with fake DNA."

Emily stood silently.

She had no interest in arguing.

Then Edward made a mistake.

He pointed directly at Sarah's framed photograph.

"That woman ruined this family."

Before Richard could react...

Emily walked across the room and slapped Edward so hard his expensive glasses flew onto the marble floor.

"You don't get to insult my mother."

Silence.

No one moved.

Edward's face twisted with rage.

"You'll regret that."

He stormed out.

Three days later...

Emily visited Sarah's grave alone.

She placed fresh white lilies beside the headstone.

"I'm trying, Mom..."

"I really am."

A quiet voice answered behind her.

"So... you're Sarah's daughter."

Emily turned.

An elderly man wearing an old military coat stood beside another grave.

He held a faded photograph almost identical to hers.

Only this one showed Sarah standing beside another young man.

The stranger slowly looked at Richard's picture inside Emily's hand.

Then he whispered the words that froze her blood.

"I've been looking for you for twenty-five years too."

He reached into his coat and handed Emily a sealed envelope.

"Your mother asked me never to open this."

"But she said..."

"If my daughter ever finds Richard..."

"...give her this."

Emily stared at the handwriting.

It was unmistakably Sarah's.

But someone had already broken the seal.

Someone had read the letter before she ever received it.

And in the corner...

There was fresh fingerprint powder.

Someone else was searching for the same secret.

Someone willing to kill for it.
