Chapter 1

When Isabella Montiel opened the front door of her family's mansion in Las Lomas, she found her father crawling across the marble floor.

Ricardo Montiel, founder of one of Mexico City's largest construction companies, was dragging himself forward with one arm, struggling to breathe. His right leg was still weak after the accident, and a dirty bandage wrapped around his wrist.

Standing over him, Verónica smiled.

"Faster, Ricardo," she said, resting the pointed tip of her red high heel inches from his fingers. "Or maybe you don't need your medicine today, either."

A few feet away, Bruno—Verónica's son—leaned casually against the staircase.

On his wrist was the gold watch Isabella's late mother had given Ricardo for their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

He wore it like a trophy.

Isabella quietly set her suitcase beside the front door.

It had been six years since she walked out of that house with a broken heart.

Back then, she had been a frightened young woman, exhausted from watching Verónica slowly take over every corner that had once belonged to her mother.

Now she was a corporate attorney specializing in fraud, forged signatures, and shell companies created to hide stolen money.

She had returned because of a text message sent at 1:17 a.m. by Ricardo's night nurse, Ángela.

"Please come back. Something is terribly wrong."

Now she understood exactly what Ángela meant.

Ricardo reached for a fallen teacup.

His hand shook so badly that hot tea spilled across his skin.

Verónica laughed.

"You used to control half this city.

Look at you now."

Then she noticed Isabella.

"Well, well... the orphaned little princess finally came back."

Isabella's mother had died nine years earlier, but Verónica never missed an opportunity to use that loss to make her feel small, unwanted, and replaceable.

"Bella... you shouldn't have come," Ricardo whispered.

Bruno smirked.

"Even he knows there's nothing you can do."

Verónica pretended to blow Isabella a mocking kiss.

"Your father already signed everything over to me.

The house.

The company shares.

The bank accounts.

Control of the business.

He finally realized who actually stayed to take care of him."

Ricardo lowered his eyes in shame.

Isabella looked at the red heel beside his shoulder, the neglected bandage on his wrist, and the fear in his eyes.

"Did he really give everything to you?" she asked quietly.

"Or did you make him sign while he was sedated?"

Silence instantly filled the room.

Bruno took a threatening step toward her.

"You'd better watch your mouth."

Isabella glanced at the gold watch on his wrist.

"Take it off."

"Ricardo gave it to me."

She turned to her father.

"Is that true?"

Ricardo closed his eyes.

"No."

The answer was barely more than a whisper.

But it was enough.

Verónica stepped between them.

"This is my house.

You don't come in here giving orders."

Ignoring her, Isabella knelt beside her father, helped him sit upright, and gently wiped the spilled tea from his hand with the sleeve of her blazer.

"No," she said calmly.

"This stopped being a home a long time ago.

It's a crime scene."

Bruno laughed.

That was his first mistake.

Isabella pulled out her phone.

A recording echoed through the grand entrance hall.

It was Verónica's voice.

"Double his dosage before the notary arrives. I need him too confused to ask any questions."

Bruno's smile disappeared.

The color drained from Verónica's face.

Ricardo slowly lifted his head, stunned.

Isabella opened her handbag.

Inside were court filings, copies of a family trust, medical reports, and seven audio recordings sent by Ángela.

"Now," she said, "let's talk about who really owns this house."

Blue police lights reflected across the mansion's windows.

And for the first time...

Verónica realized Isabella hadn't returned to ask for permission.

She had returned...

...to lock the door from the outside.
