Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Verdict

The wail of police sirens cut through the quiet suburban afternoon exactly twelve minutes later.
Flashing red and blue lights painted the living room walls in frantic strokes. Two uniformed officers stepped through the front door, accompanied by Dr. Harrison—a stern, grey-haired physician who had treated Florence for over a decade—and a clinical nurse carrying a professional medical kit.
Gwendolyn tried to play the victim immediately, shedding instant tears and rushing toward the lead officer with trembling hands.
“Officer, thank God you’re here! My husband has completely lost his mind! He’s threatening me, he’s unstable, and he’s fabricating stories to cover up his mother’s mental decline—”
“Save it, Mrs. Weaver,” Officer Vance said, holding up a hand to halt her performance. He had seen too many domestic disputes to fall for theatrical waterworks. “Mr. Weaver called us regarding elder abuse and medical neglect. Step away from the couch, please.”
Dr. Harrison didn’t even glance at Gwendolyn. He walked straight past her, his face grim, and headed into the back bedroom. Lucas followed closely behind.
For the next twenty minutes, the bedroom transformed into a clinical examination room. The forensic nurse carefully documented every single bruise on Florence’s arms, legs, and back using a specialized high-resolution camera. She took digital swabs, blood pressure readings, and neurological responsiveness tests.
Florence clutched Lucas’s hand the entire time, whispering apologies for “causing trouble.”
When Dr. Harrison finally stepped back into the hallway, his expression was thunderous. He pulled Lucas aside, his voice shaking with restrained rage.
“Lucas, your mother’s physical condition is catastrophic. She is severely malnourished, dehydrated to a dangerous degree, and showing signs of acute withdrawal from her primary neurological stabilizers.”
“Withdrawal?” Lucas frowned. “But she hasn’t been taking them because Gwendolyn hid them.”
“No,” Dr. Harrison corrected, adjusting his glasses. “That’s not all. Look at these blood test panels we just ran on-site. There are traces of heavy sedatives in her system—substances that I never prescribed. Someone has been drugging her to keep her completely incapacitated, paralyzed, and docile.”
Lucas felt the air leave his lungs. “Drugging her? Why?”
“To keep her from speaking, moving, or interfering with something,” Dr. Harrison stated flatly. “If you had come home thirty minutes later, your mother wouldn't have survived the week. Her organs were beginning to shut down from deliberate neglect.”
Lucas walked back into the living room, the video on his phone burning a hole in his pocket.
Gwendolyn was sitting cross-legged on the chair now, flanked by the two police officers. She had recovered her composure, crossing her arms and sneering as Lucas entered.
“Done with your little theatrical investigation?” she mocked, her voice dripping with venom. “Because once your little stunt is over, I am filing for divorce, taking half of everything you own, and having you thrown out of this neighborhood for defamation.”
Lucas didn’t yell. He walked up to the coffee table, picked up the black bag of medicine, and dropped it right into the hands of Officer Vance.
“Officer, my wife has been systematically starving, beating, and chemically sedating my bedridden mother while forging medical logs,” Lucas said clearly. “I have video footage of her physically assaulting my mother less than an hour ago, corroborated by Dr. Harrison’s preliminary medical assessment of elder abuse and poisoning.”
Gwendolyn’s smug expression vanished. “You—you recorded me?”
“Every second,” Lucas replied.
Officer Vance looked down at the bag of untouched prescription drugs, then up at Gwendolyn, whose face had gone chalk-white. He clicked his radio, signaling for backup transport.
“Gwendolyn Weaver, you are under arrest for suspected elder abuse, physical assault, and reckless endangerment of life. You have the right to remain silent—”
“Get your hands off me!” Gwendolyn shrieked as the officer grabbed her wrists and snapped steel cuffs around them. “Lucas, you idiot! You absolute fool! You’re destroying your own life! You have no idea what you’ve just ruined!”
She screamed profanities all the way out the front door, thrashing against the officers as they forced her into the back of the cruiser.
The sirens faded into the distance, leaving behind a heavy, echoing silence in the Weaver household.

Lucas sat down on the sofa, burying his face in his hands. He thought the nightmare was over. He thought he had saved his mother and locked away the monster living under his roof.
He was catastrophically wrong.
