Chapter 6 - The Counter-Attack

At exactly 11:30 AM, Lucas walked through the glass doors of Sterling & Associates Wealth Management—a towering fifty-story glass monolith located in the heart of downtown.
He wasn’t wearing his usual rumpled office suit. He wore a sharp, tailored charcoal-grey suit he had bought for a corporate gala two years prior, his hair slicked back, his expression carved from absolute granite.
In his hand, he carried a sleek leather briefcase containing the original black leather ledger, the flash drive, and a thick stack of printed federal warrants.
The receptionist looked up, smiling politely. “Good morning, sir. Do you have an appointment?”
“Tell Arthur Sterling that Lucas Weaver is here to deliver the signed transfer deed,” Lucas said smoothly.
The receptionist blinked, checked her computer terminal, and immediately dialed an internal extension. “Mr. Weaver? Yes, Mr. Sterling is expecting you. Penthouse suite, Floor 50. Take the private executive elevator on the left.”
Lucas stepped into the private elevator. The doors slid shut, sealing him inside as the digital floor counter began counting upward with dizzying speed: 30, 35, 42, 48, 50.
The doors chimed and opened directly into a sprawling, sunlit executive office overlooking the entire skyline of the city. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a breathtaking view of the urban sprawl, and standing by the window holding a crystal glass of scotch was Arthur Sterling—a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive bespoke suit with cold, calculating eyes.
Arthur turned around, raising his glass in a mock toast.
“Ah, Lucas. I knew you were a practical man. Greed and common sense always win out in the end. Do you have the signed deed?”
Lucas stepped out of the elevator, walking slowly across the plush Persian rug. He didn't smile. He placed his leather briefcase squarely in the center of Arthur’s polished mahogany desk.
“I have everything you asked for, Arthur,” Lucas said quietly.
Arthur set his scotch glass down, stepping eagerly toward the desk. He unlatched the briefcase and threw back the lid, expecting to find the notarized property transfer signatures.
Instead, his fingers brushed against a blinking digital recording device wired directly to a portable transmitter, and a stack of printed federal subpoenas stamped with the seal of the United States Department of Justice.
Arthur’s face went completely rigid. He snapped his head up, glaring at Lucas. “What is the meaning of this?”
“It means your audit just came early,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from behind the private office doors.
The heavy mahogany doors flew open, and a squad of federal agents, led by Officer Vance and a senior federal prosecutor, flooded into the penthouse suite. Flashing federal badges gleamed in the sunlight.
Arthur staggered backward, knocking his crystal glass off the desk. It shattered against the floor, amber liquid splashing across the pristine rug.
“You—you set me up!” Arthur snarled, his composure completely evaporating as federal agents pinned his arms behind his back and slapped steel handcuffs on his wrists.
“Insurance fraud investigators are very good at following paper trails, Arthur,” Lucas said, leaning calmly against the edge of the desk. “And federal cyber-crime units are even better at tracking corporate shell companies. While you were threatening me on the phone, my laptop was automatically transmitting every single wire transfer receipt, signature forgery log, and voice recording of your extortion threats directly to the FBI.”
Arthur thrashed against the agents, his face contorted in pure fury. “You think you’ve won, you arrogant little clerk? Gwendolyn will destroy you! The entire legal framework protecting that estate is airtight! Without my signature, you can't touch a dime!”
“I don't need your signature,” Lucas replied coldly, pulling a pristine legal document out of his inside jacket pocket and holding it up for Arthur to see. “This is a court-ordered emergency asset freeze and trust annulment, signed by a federal judge thirty minutes ago. Sterling Holdings has been officially dissolved under federal RICO statutes for racketeering, elder exploitation, and financial fraud.”
Arthur’s knees buckled. The color drained entirely from his face, and he slumped downward as federal agents hauled him toward the executive elevator.

As the doors closed on Arthur Sterling’s ruined empire, Lucas stood alone in the sunlit penthouse, looking out over the city skyline.
The nightmare was finally over. Or so he thought.
