CHAPTER 5 — THE STRANGER WHO KNEW OUR SECRET
The mysterious woman returned two days later.
This time she walked directly into Maya's hospital room.
She looked to be around sixty.
Elegant.
Confident.
Her silver hair was perfectly styled, and every movement suggested someone accustomed to authority.
Maya's face immediately turned pale.
"You..."
The woman smiled gently.
"It's been a long time."
I looked between them.
"You know each other?"
Neither answered.
Instead, the woman introduced herself.
"My name is Elena Kovács."
"I was your mother's closest friend."
She turned toward me.
"And I owe both of you an apology."
The room fell silent.
Elena slowly removed an old envelope from her handbag.
"I've carried this for nearly six years."
Inside were medical reports.
Insurance documents.
Bank transfers.
And one letter addressed to me.
"I don't understand," I whispered.
Elena sighed.
"After Maya's second miscarriage, your mother came to me."
"She was terrified."
"She knew Maya was becoming seriously ill, but Maya begged her not to tell you."
My heartbeat quickened.
"Why?"
"Because she believed you would give up your dreams to care for her."
I looked at Maya in disbelief.
She quietly nodded.
"I knew you'd sacrifice everything."
"And I couldn't let your entire life disappear with mine."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
For months I had believed she had emotionally abandoned me.
The truth was exactly the opposite.
She had been trying to protect me from a future she believed would destroy me.
Elena placed one final document onto the bed.
"This belongs to both of you."
It was a property deed.

"The mortgage?"
"It's completely paid."
"What?"
"Maya finished paying it off months ago."
I stared at her.
"How?"
She smiled awkwardly.
"I sold the jewelry my grandmother left me."
The necklace I had always admired.
The earrings she wore on our wedding day.
Everything.
Gone.
She had sacrificed every family heirloom to keep our dream home.
Without ever telling me.
I suddenly realized something horrifying.
The apartment I thought we had lost...
She had secretly saved.
