CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN WHO STOLE MY LIFE

Meeting my biological mother answered one question.

But it opened dozens more.

"Why wasn't I returned to you?" I asked.

Tears streamed down her face.

"Because someone lied."

She handed me another envelope.

Inside were court documents.

Witness statements.

And one familiar surname.

Kovács.

I looked up in disbelief.

"Elena?"

My mother nodded sadly.

"Her late husband."

My stomach tightened.

According to the investigation, Elena's husband had worked as a hospital administrator during the fire.

Instead of reporting every surviving child, he had secretly altered several records to hide his own mistakes during the evacuation.

His negligence had caused the mix-up.

To avoid prison...

He falsified official documents.

My biological family was told I had died.

My adoptive parents were told I had been abandoned.

Two innocent families had their lives destroyed because one man chose to protect his career.

Elena had only discovered the truth after her husband's death.

That explained everything.

Her guilt.

Her kindness toward Maya.

The mysterious financial help.

She had been trying to make peace with a tragedy she never caused but had lived beside for decades.

When I confronted her, she didn't deny a single word.

"I should have come to you years ago," she whispered.

"I was afraid."

"I know forgiveness isn't something I deserve."

Looking at the broken woman before me, I realized hatred wouldn't return the years we'd lost.

Her husband had committed the crime.

She had spent the rest of her life trying to repair it.

"I forgive you," I quietly said.

She collapsed into tears.

Maya squeezed my hand.

May you like

Sometimes justice isn't revenge.

Sometimes it's finally allowing broken people to stop carrying unbearable guilt.
