CHAPTER 9 — THE MIRACLE WE NEVER EXPECTED

Nearly one year passed.

Maya's remission continued.

Every hospital checkup brought better news.

For the first time in years, laughter returned to our home.

One spring morning we walked through a park overlooking the Danube.

The trees were blooming.

Children were playing nearby.

Maya suddenly stopped walking.

"Arjun..."

"What is it?"

She looked nervous.

"I've been hiding something."

My heart immediately sank.

"What happened?"

Instead of answering, she pulled a small envelope from her handbag.

It wasn't another medical report.

It was an ultrasound image.

I stared at it, unable to understand.

Then she smiled through happy tears.

"I'm pregnant."

The world seemed to stand still.

I remembered every miscarriage.

Every sleepless night.

Every prayer that had gone unanswered.

"I thought..."

"The doctors told us..."

She nodded.

"They said it was almost impossible."

"They never said impossible."

I wrapped my arms around her as both of us cried in the middle of the park.

Nine months later, I stood in the very same hospital corridor where I had once found Maya sitting alone in despair.

This time...

I wasn't waiting for devastating news.

I was waiting to meet our child.

A nurse pushed open the delivery room doors.

"Congratulations."

"You have a beautiful baby girl."

As I held our daughter for the first time, Maya smiled weakly from the hospital bed.

"Have you thought of a name?"

I looked down at the tiny life sleeping peacefully in my arms.

"Hope."

Maya smiled.

"That's perfect."

Because hope was exactly what had carried us through grief...

Through divorce...

Through illness...

Through secrets buried for decades...

And finally...

Back to each other.

Sometimes life doesn't give us a second chance because we deserve one.

Sometimes it gives us one because love refused to let the story end the first time.
