Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe screen flashed a silent, blinding green: TRANSACTION EXECUTED. ASSETS SEIZED.

I let my head sink back against the floorboards, letting out a soft, controlled breath. Adrian was still standing over me, his face twisted in that familiar cocktail of arrogance and contempt. He thought my silence was defeat. He thought the heavy, agonizing cramp blooming low in my abdomen meant he was winning.

“Get off the floor before you ruin the rug,” Adrian snapped, tossing a final, disgusted look my way before turning on his heel. Vanessa followed him, her high heels clicking a mocking rhythm against the hallway floor. “Come on, babe, let’s get another drink. The help is useless tonight.”

The bedroom door clicked shut. The heavy bass from the downstairs lounge vibrated through the floorboards again, shaking the dust motes in the dim light.

I rolled onto my side, clutching my stomach. The twins fluttered frantically, sensing my adrenaline spike. “Shh, babies, stay strong,” I whispered into the quiet dark, pressing my forehead against the cool wood.

My phone buzzed silently in my palm. A single notification popped up from an encrypted messaging app—not a social media app, but the high-security terminal of Apex Capital Management, the very venture capital firm bearing Adrian’s name on a gilded plaque outside.

It was a message from Marcus Vance, my personal chief legal counsel and the only person in this city who actually knew who held the purse strings.

“The debt covenants have been triggered, Mara. Apex’s primary liquidity provider—us—has officially called in the $45 million bridge loan. Adrian has zero cash reserves. All his collateral, including this mansion, is now legally locked under our holding entity. He is officially insolvent.”

A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of my lips.

For five years, Adrian had paraded around Silicon Valley as a self-made tech wizard. He loved the spotlight, the glossy magazine spreads, the interviews where he talked about his "visionary genius." He never bothered to look at the fine print of the emergency capital injection he needed two years ago when his first major startup crashed and burned. He was so desperate for cash, so blinded by his own ego, that he signed over controlling interest of his parent company to a mysterious, silent offshore trust.

He thought the trust belonged to an anonymous foreign investor.

He never suspected that "Apex Holdings LLC" was entirely funded by my pre-marital inheritance—the generational wealth my father left me, carefully insulated from Adrian's grasping hands through a watertight ironclad prenup that Adrian had foolishly waived review on because he thought I was just a naive, broke art student.

The phone buzzed again.

“The freeze on corporate accounts goes live globally in exactly thirty minutes,” Marcus’s text read. “Just as your dinner party reaches its climax. What’s our next move?”

I typed back with one thumb, my eyes fixed on the ceiling.

“Let them pop the champagne. Let them toast to his fake empire. Cut off his personal credit cards right now, but leave his business checking account open just long enough for him to try and pay the catering bill with a bouncing check. I want him humiliated in front of every single VIP in the valley.”
