Chapter 1 - THE ACCORD OF BLOOD AND ASHESMauricioâs hands trembled as he held the yellowed legal document. The silence in the master suite was so profound that the soft rustle of the paper sounded like thunder.

The three faces in the photographs weren't infants or toddlers. They were young teenagers with sharp, hollow cheekbones and eyes that had seen too much darkness. But it was the last name typed neatly on the petition that made the air leave Mauricioâs lungs:
Salgado.
Juan Salgado. Pablo Salgado. Lili Salgado.
"What... what is the meaning of this, Elena?" Mauricioâs voice broke, hovering between sheer confusion and rising panic. "Why do these children carry my familyâs name?"
Elena stood before him, her silk robe resting around her feet, exposing the painful, ropy burn scar that ran across her pale skin like a wicked vine. She didn't look like a timid housekeeper anymore; her eyes burned with a fierce, terrifying intensity.
"They aren't my children, Mauricio," she said quietly, her voice laced with tears and steel. "They are my younger brothers and sister. And the man who burned our home to the ground, the man who left me scarred and murdered our parents seven years ago... was your father, Guillermo Salgado."
Mauricio stepped back, hitting the edge of the mahogany four-poster bed. "No. Thatâs impossible! My father was a philanthropist! He died in a plane crash six years ago!"
"He didn't die in a plane crash to escape his sins, Mauricio. He faked his death to escape the cartel he was laundering money for!" Elena stepped forward, taking the document from his trembling fingers. "Your family's empireâthe high-rise buildings, the private jets, the very ring you put on my finger todayâwas built on the stolen land and burned remains of my familyâs farm in Zacatecas. My father refused to sell his copper mine to Guillermo Salgado. So your father had us locked inside our house and set it ablaze."
Mauricio felt as though the floor was caving in beneath him. The woman he lovedâthe soft-spoken angel who had stayed by his hospital bed when his own flesh and blood abandoned himâhad entered his life not by chance, but by design.
"You came into my house as a maid..." Mauricio whispered, horror dawning on him. "This was all planned?"
"I came for revenge, Mauricio," Elena said, a tear finally slipping down her cheek. "I swore I would dismantle the Salgado family from the inside out. I was going to ruin you. But then..." She choked on a sob. "...then I saw who you really were. You weren't like him. You were gentle. You were good. And when you almost died at Médica Sur... I realized I had fallen in love with my worst enemy's son."
Before Mauricio could absorb her confession, his phone blasted a harsh, rhythmic tone across the room. It was a security alert from his mansion's private gate.
He glanced at the screen. The perimeter cameras showed three heavily armored SUVs breaching the outer gates of the Valle de Bravo estate.
Then came a text message from an unlisted number: > "Welcome to the family, Elena. Hand over Guillermo's ledger, or your 'children' in Zacatecas won't make it to sunrise. - Dad."

Mauricio looked up, his face drained of color.
His father wasn't dead. And he was here to finish what he started seven years ago.
