Chapter 7 - THE RECKONINGSix months later.

The Salgado International scandal became the biggest news story in the history of Latin American finance.

The documents leaked from Elena’s dead-man's switch triggered a massive federal cleanup. Over forty high-ranking government officials, judges, and cartel liaisons were arrested. The Salgado family assets were frozen, seized, and auctioned off by the government to liquidate funds for victim restitution.

Mauricio did not fight the seizure. In fact, he cooperated fully with federal prosecutors. He voluntarily surrendered his entire inheritance, his mansion in Las Lomas, and his CEO title.

The press mocked him. Headlines across Mexico read: ā€œTHE FOOLISH MILLIONAIRE WHO GAVE AWAY HIS EMPIRE FOR A MAID.ā€

ā€œFROM LAS LOMAS TO NOTHING: THE DOWNFALL OF MAURICIO SALGADO.ā€

But Mauricio didn't care. For the first time in thirty years, he could breathe without the weight of a dirty empire crushing his lungs.

In a small, sunny courtroom in New York City, a judge struck a gavel.

"By the power vested in me by the State of New York, I hereby grant legal, full custody of Juan, Pablo, and Lili Cruz to Mauricio and Elena Salgado."

Elena burst into tears, turning around to hug the three teenagers sitting behind her.

Juan, now sixteen, looked at Mauricio. The defensive, suspicious boy who had grown up hating the Salgado name stepped forward and extended his hand.

"Thank you... for saving our sister," Juan whispered.

Mauricio looked at the boy, pulled him into a tight embrace, and whispered, "We’re family now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

That evening, the family of five sat together in a modest, three-bedroom apartment overlooking Central Park—purchased not with Salgado blood money, but with the legal settlement Elena had received as a victim of the Zacatecas land grabs.

As the teenagers played video games in the living room, Mauricio stood on the balcony, watching the sunset over the skyline.

Elena walked up behind him, wrapping a soft wool blanket around his shoulders and resting her head against his back.

"Do you miss it?" she asked softly. "The mansion? The luxury? Being the king of Mexico City?"

Mauricio turned around, framing her beautiful face with his hands. He leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips.

"I spent thirty years living in a castle built on lies," Mauricio smiled softly. "I’d rather live in a one-room apartment with you than own the entire world without you."

Elena smiled, her eyes sparkling with joy. But then, her expression shifted slightly. A soft, mischievous smirk played on her lips.

"Good," she said, leaning in close to his ear. "Because there’s one last secret I haven't told you about my family."

Mauricio blinked, his smile freezing. "Wait... what? Elena... please tell me you don't have three more siblings hidden somewhere."

Elena laughed—a beautiful, ringing sound that filled the evening air.

"No," she whispered, taking his hand and pressing it gently against her flat stomach. "Not siblings. But in seven months... Juan, Pablo, and Lili are going to become big brothers and a big sister."

Mauricio froze, his heart pounding in his chest. "You're... you're pregnant?"

"We are going to build a new family, Mauricio," Elena said softly, tears of happiness filling her eyes. "A real one."

Mauricio swept her up into his arms, spinning her around on the balcony under the warm golden rays of the New York sunset, laughing aloud with pure, unadulterated joy.
