Chapter 4 - THE TRAP CLOSES"Loyalty?" I stood up slowly, gently placing Sofía behind me and stepping between my daughter, my disabled father, and the woman who had birthed me. The word felt toxic coming from Teresa’s lips. "You murdered my wife, staged a suicide, and tried to bury her before I could look at her body. That isn't loyalty, Teresa. That's a criminal conspiracy."

Teresa let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent shivers down my spine.

"Murder? Such an ugly word, Alejandro," she said, stepping further into the room. Heavy footsteps echoed behind her in the hallway. Diego appeared, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker, followed closely by Aunt Ofelia, who had abandoned the funeral parlor downstairs to join the clean-up crew.

"She was a liability, Alejandro," Ofelia chimed in, her voice unnaturally calm for a woman mourning her niece-in-law. "She discovered that Diego used the family security company’s accounts to pay off his gambling debts to the cartel. If the bosses found out, they wouldn't just kill Diego—they’d wipe out all of us. Mariana’s death was a necessary sacrifice for the survival of this family."

"You traded her life for yours," I growled, my muscles tensing as I calculated the angles, the distances, and the neutralization paths. Two armed, desperate adults in a confined space.

"And now, unfortunately, you've made the exact same choice," Diego sneered, lifting the iron poker. "We told you to stay on your 72-hour assignment. If you had just stayed away a little longer, we could have buried her, collected the life insurance, and blamed her disappearance on a mental breakdown. But you just had to come home."

"Diego, put the poker down," I warned, my voice dropping an octave into a cold, lethal register. "You have no idea who you're messing with."

"Oh, we know exactly who we're messing with," Teresa smiled, raising her cell phone. "And right now, I'm sending a text to the men downstairs. The local police chief is eating cake at our front gate, Alejandro. By sunrise, this house will have experienced a tragic, accidental fire. A grieving husband, driven mad by his wife's suicide, losing everything in a flash."

She hit Send.
