Chapter 9 - THE AFTERMATH AND THE NEW BEGINNINGTwo weeks after the arrests, our house finally felt like a home again—though the ghosts of the past had been thoroughly swept away.

The federal government cleared my name of any association with the syndicate, fully restoring my security clearance and commending my actions during the raid. The corrupt municipal officials who had protected my mother’s network were all stripped of their badges and locked behind bars.

My father, Ernesto, moved into the master suite on the ground floor, where physical therapists began working with him daily. Though his speech remained limited, the weight of the dark secrets that had choked him for years was gone. He smiled more often now, spending his afternoons reading fairy tales to Sofía in the garden.

One evening, while clearing out Mariana’s old desk in the third-floor bedroom—the same desk Diego had smashed—I found something tucked deep inside a hidden compartment beneath the drawer.

It was a small, silver locket I had given her on our wedding day.

Inside was a tiny photograph of the three of us: Mariana, Sofía, and me, smiling under a bright summer sun.

I clipped it around my neck, resting it right over my heart. The mission was over. The enemy was defeated. And justice, though forged in blood and betrayal, had finally prevailed.
