Chapter 7 - THE HIDDEN VAULT IN THE BASEMENTWith the federal team securing the perimeter, Director Harrison led me down to the underground wine cellar beneath the kitchen—a hidden room my father had built decades ago, which Teresa and Diego thought was still secret.

Using a physical key my father had slipped into my palm before the agents arrived, I unlocked the heavy iron door.

Inside wasn't just wine. It was a secondary command center.

Shelves lined with folders, hard drives, and financial ledgers revealed the true extent of the conspiracy. It wasn't just Diego's gambling debts. Teresa had been laundering money for the city’s most dangerous drug cartel for over five years, using our legitimate private security company as a front.

Mariana hadn't stumbled upon the embezzlement by accident. She had been investigating why company funds were being funneled into offshore accounts registered under Aunt Ofelia’s funeral home.

"Look at this," Harrison said, shining his tactical flashlight onto a ledger open on the central desk. "They weren't just laundering money. They were planning to use your security company to smuggle contraband through shipping ports under your name, Alejandro. If you hadn't returned when you did, you would have taken the fall for the entire syndicate."

My hands shook, not from fear, but from a cold, blinding fury. They hadn't just killed my wife because she found out; they had engineered my 72-hour assignment to get me out of the way, framed Mariana's death as a suicide, and tried to bury her before I could ask a single question.

"They wanted me disgraced, imprisoned, or dead," I muttered.

"Well, they picked the wrong operative," Harrison patted my shoulder. "Every single asset of theirs is frozen. The local police chief was arrested twenty minutes ago at the front gates. Your family’s criminal empire is finished."
