Chapter 10 - The True FortuneThat evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the Cambridge sky in shades of gold and violet, Gabriel sat on the front porch steps with Clara curled up in his lap.

The streetlights flickered on one by one. The autumn breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees overhead—the exact same trees that had stood there twenty years ago when he and Lucia were young, ambitious, and deeply in love.
"Daddy?" Clara whispered, her green eyes heavy with sleep.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you miss the big skyscraper?"
Gabriel looked down at his daughter, then out at the quiet, peaceful street where children were playing tag on the sidewalk and neighbors were laughing on their porches. He smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in his life.
"No, Clara," Gabriel said, kissing the top of her head. "I spent my whole life building a fortress to keep the world out. I didn't realize until today..." He squeezed her hand tightly. "...that I was the one who was locked inside."
Clara yawned, snuggling deeper into his chest. "Mom would have loved this house."
"I know she would have," Gabriel whispered, a single tear of pure peace tracing down his cheek as he looked up at the evening star shining brightly above them. "I know she's watching right now."
