Chapter 9 - Ashes to EmpireThree months later.

The headlines in The Wall Street Journal were no longer about the collapse of Mendes Corp, but about something far more shocking:

"FALLEN TITAN GABRIEL MENDES SURRENDERS ENTIRE FORTUNE TO CHARITY; LAUNCHES LUCIA FOUNDATION FOR ORPHANED CHILDREN."

The grand glass-and-steel monolith of Mendes Tower was gone, sold off to pay back every corporate debt and investor liability. Gabriel hadn't kept a single penny of his personal fortune for himself. Instead, he had taken a small, modest brick townhouse in Cambridge—just blocks away from the university library where he and Lucia had first met twenty years ago.

Inside the sunlit kitchen of the townhouse, the smell of burnt pancakes filled the air.

"I told you, you have to flip them before the edges turn black," Clara laughed, standing on a step stool by the stove, wearing a flour-dusted apron that said World's Best Dad.

Gabriel, wearing a simple cotton shirt with rolled-up sleeves instead of an Italian tailored suit, held up a spatula in surrender. "Ancient economic principles taught me to maximize efficiency, Clara. They didn't teach me how to cook breakfast."

"You're hopeless," Clara giggled, flipping a pancake with expert precision.

The doorbell rang.

Gabriel walked down the short hallway and pulled open the front door. Standing on the porch was Catherine Morrison, holding a legal envelope with a bright gold wax seal.

"Good morning, Mr. Mendes," Catherine smiled warmly.

"Good morning, Catherine. Come in. Coffee?"

"I'd love some." Catherine stepped inside, looking around the cozy, sunlit living room filled with children's books, framed drawings, and photographs of Lucia smiling under the Cambridge trees. "Though I suspect you're a bit busy."

"Never too busy," Gabriel said, gesturing to the kitchen table.

Catherine slid the envelope across the wood. Gabriel opened it slowly. Inside was the final, unassailable adoption decree, signed by the federal judge, officially granting him full parental custody of Clara Rose Mendes.

Gabriel stared at the paper, his throat tightening with an emotion far more powerful than any corporate merger he had ever engineered.

"It's official," Catherine said softly. "You're a full-time father, Gabriel. No escape routes left."

"I wouldn't want one," Gabriel replied, looking over at Clara, who was humming a cheerful tune as she plated the pancakes.
