Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal RevealedBefore Victor could turn toward the elevator, the heavy steel doors chimed again. This time, two federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped out, their badges gleaming under the penthouse lights.

"Victor Vance," Agent Miller announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion, and the falsification of legal documents."
"This is insane! You can't do this! Gabriel, you'll pay for this!" Victor screamed, thrashing as the federal agents pinned his arms behind his back and slapped the cuffs onto his wrists.
As Victor was dragged backward toward the elevator, his eyes locked onto Gabriel with pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you won, Mendes? Check your corporate server! Check your subsidiary accounts right now! While you were playing daddy in this glass cage, I executed a hostile asset liquidation of Mendes Corp! Your company is already bankrupt!"
The elevator doors closed, cutting off Victor’s manic laughter.
Silence descended upon the penthouse once more. Regina, who had followed the federal agents out of the elevator, dropped her tablet onto the floor.
"Sir..." Regina whispered, her voice trembling. "He's right. I just checked the primary banking server. The subsidiary accounts... they've been drained. Mendes Corp is locked out of its own liquidity reserves."
Gabriel stood motionless for a moment. All of his wealth, his empire, the fortress he had spent twenty years constructing brick by brick—wiped out in a single afternoon.
Clara looked up at him, her extraordinary green eyes filled with a maturity no seven-year-old should ever possess. She reached out and took his large, calloused hand in her small one.
"Daddy," she said softly, using the word for the very first time. "We don't need a castle made of glass. Mom said you were strongest when you had nothing to lose."

Gabriel looked down at his daughter. A heavy weight lifted from his chest—a weight he hadn't realized he'd been carrying for two decades. He dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around Clara and pulling her into an embrace so fierce, so protective, that all the gold in the world couldn't buy its value.
"You're right, sweetheart," Gabriel whispered, burying his face in her brown hair as tears finally broke free from his eyes. "We don't need any of it."
