Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Fallen King

March arrived with icy rain sweeping across the grey streets of Manhattan.
The trial of Julian Blackwood drew a massive crowd of journalists, photographers, and former business associates who packed the gallery of the federal courthouse. Julian sat at the defense table, wearing a dark blue suit provided by his public defender. It hung loosely on his frail frame—he had lost twenty pounds in prison, his hair had turned grey at the temples, and his posture was completely broken.
Across the room sat the prosecution team, flanked by Victoria Carter and Arthur Vance.
Elena was not in the room. She had refused to give Julian the satisfaction of her presence.
The trial lasted less than three days.
The evidence presented by the prosecution was overwhelming. Bank records showing wire transfers to offshore accounts; lease agreements signed under false names; hotel receipts from Aspen, Miami, and Paris; and damning testimony from Isabel Vance, who took the witness stand and detailed exactly how Julian had bragged about misusing client funds to finance her lifestyle.
When the prosecutor asked Isabel if Julian had ever expressed guilt about his actions, Isabel looked directly at Julian with cold contempt.
"Never," she testified under oath. "He told me his wife was simple, naive, and completely dependent on him. He said he controlled everything."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the verdict was read in a firm, unwavering voice:
"Guilty on Count One: Federal Wire Fraud. Guilty on Count Two: Tax Evasion. Guilty on Count Three: Grand Larceny. Guilty on Count Four: Corporate Embezzlement."
Julian stood before the judge’s bench as the sentence was handed down.
"Mr. Blackwood," the judge said, looking down over his spectacles with disgust. "You are a man who possessed every advantage—wealth, position, a loving family, and the trust of your peers. Yet, out of pure arrogance and greed, you constructed a web of deceit that destroyed your firm, betrayed your family, and violated federal law. You showed no remorse until you were caught."
The judge slammed his gavel down. "I sentence you to twelve years in federal custody, followed by five years of supervised release. Restitution in the amount of $4.8 million will be seized immediately from any future income or assets."
Julian was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. As he walked down the central aisle, the camera flashes blinded him. The shouts of reporters echoed in his ears:
"Julian! How do you feel about your sentence?"
"Julian! Any words for Elena?"
May you like
"Julian! Was it worth it?"
Julian kept his head bowed, staring at the floor, unable to utter a single word.
