Chapter 2 - The Unraveling at the Country Club

The fallout began before sunset.

Laya and Evan had attempted to salvage a scaled-down reception at a local Italian restaurant after the country club venue cancelled their primary booking due to the missing verification card. They had invited thirty of their closest friends and family members, desperately trying to project an image of serene resilience.

Instead, they walked into a financial ambush.

According to a breathless text message from my cousin Chloe—who had suddenly switched sides once she smelled blood in the water—the restaurant manager had intercepted Laya at the front door demanding payment in full, upfront, before a single plate of pasta was served.

Laya’s credit card had declined. Twice.

Evan’s card had maxed out on the third try, leaving them standing in the middle of a crowded dining room while thirty bewildered guests watched the bride-to-be scramble for cash that simply didn't exist.

When Laya tried to call Mom for emergency funds, Mom’s phone was switched straight to voicemail. For the first time in her life, the safety net hadn't just frayed—it had been rolled up and locked away.

My phone remained silent on the coffee table, vibrating softly against the wood as missed calls piled up from Laya, Evan, and three different aunts demanding to know why the reception was currently dissolving into a shouting match over cold garlic bread.

I picked up the remote, turned on the television, and smiled.
