Chapter 20 - The Final Footstep

The snow fell softly across the city streets on Christmas Eve, exactly five years since the night my old life ended and my real life began.

Marcus and I walked through Memorial Park, the crisp winter air biting at our cheeks as the streetlamps cast a golden glow over the frozen pond.

As we approached the wooden bench beneath the ancient oak tree, I paused.

Sitting right there on the wooden slats was a pair of worn-out sneakers, left behind by someone who had walked through the freezing night without proper boots. Beside them lay a handwritten note on a scrap of paper: Thank you. I’m going to make things right.

I looked down at my sturdy, waterproof leather boots, then up at Marcus.

He smiled, pulling a spare pair of warm wool socks from his coat pocket and handing them to me without a word.

I slipped off my gloves, grabbed the socks, and smiled into the winter night.

Some journeys don't end. They just give you the chance to help someone else take their very first step.
